Especially when they don’t seem to be particularly bright:"We've been studying for six months - it's not that complicated," said Ferrisi, a quantitative analyst from Astoria. "It's only 468 factorial," he added - without a hint of sarcasm - referring to the number of subway stations in the system. The number of worthwhile solutions is considerably less than 468! since stations in a row effectively count as one in the combinatorics (and I’m sure that five minutes would show other similar optimizations). And 468! isn’t trillions: 450! is approximately 2E1000. |

A computer can't beat the record. You need instinct. Everyone who uses a computer to try to figure out the best route are always the ones who end up taking 30+ hours, since the computer didn't realize that X line gets backed up at certain hours, or Y line is GOed out, or Z line is gonna make a battery run - stay on or get off? |

Theoretically, you should only reach Stillwell ONCE on the entire trip. This is one station where the bathrooms are always open, although you might find someone trying to make soup in a sink.I participated in an Ultimate Ride a couple years ago where no matter how hard or clear I explained it, one of the other participants just didn't get at all that it doesn't matter if you do the N & D at the beginning of the trip, and the F & Q 12 hours later, or do them both in a row. He insisted that doing all 4 Coney lines in a row would save time, simply because a big chunk of the map could be crossed off....... |

When doing these trips, no one's group wants to "talk to others" because they all go into it with the bighead approach like they're gonna pwn the rest and they pose with a map and their cheesy wall street grins looking like bar hoppers on any given weekend. It shouldnt matter where the bathrooms are.... most people can focus well enough on the intended task that taking a piss is the third-most distant concern from one's mind. Doubt any group whose ever completed this feat has ever "consulted with another group". |

When running the entire system, do you count Union Sq for instance as one station or as 3 stations i.e. do you have to hit that station on ever line that goes through it (bway, lex and 14 th st)? |

Not all GOs get published. Unless they have inside information, they wouldn't know about things like trains single tracking through tunnels, since technically that isn't a service change, just a delay. The Joraleman tunnel was single tracking during one of my rides and I had no idea....had to sit at Wall St for a while to wait for the 4 in the opposite direction to come through. |

Depends on who you ask. I personally count a station if you arrive ANYWHERE in it. Some people claim you have to stop at every single platform. Guinness agrees with my rule.Someday I still want to run a "class A" ultimate ride. The goal is not to visit every station (expresses are allowed and encouraged), but to trace the entire subway map by riding every Right of Way on at least one track. That means EVERY east river crossing. It also means factoring in a time when you can ride between Court Square and Queens Plaza, and between Broad St and Court St. |
