Pelham 1-2-3 Remake Pics & Commentary! |
|
|
Posted by JayZeeBMT on Fri Jan 2 16:00:10 2009 My good friend Terrence Goode, who had a minor role in the upcoming remake of "The Taking Of Pelham One Two Three" sent me a couple of post-production pics from the movie. John Travolta is Mr. Green, the leader of the hijackers, reprising Robert Shaw's role in the original:![]() Playing opposite Travolta is Denzel Washington, who reprises Walter Matthau as Zachary Garber: ![]() Now, in the remake, Washigton suggested a rewrite, making Garber a TA dispatcher. Washigton admits not having seen the original (or having read the John Godey novel), but he wanted to give the Garber character "a greater challenge", so he asked the studio to portray Garber as a cop who was demoted to train dispatcher. Ludicrous, and seriously stretching the bounds of artistic license! As the author of several novels, I can say with some authority that "suspension of disbelief" has definite limits, and I told Terry that I strongly took issue with this apparent gross departure from both the novel and the 1974 film. I visited him during production, and I said--then--that messing with the storyline by introducing a backstory that does not appear in the original work is just asking for trouble. As for the Travolta pic, he is aboard what appears to be an NTT, in daylight, but the annunciator behind and above him reads, "42 Street"! Come ON now! I'll have to look into THAT when I get some advance footage (Terry knows I'm a railfan and as a Christmas gift, is slipping me some P123 goodies--I'll post 'em as they come along--lol!)...and see the photography sequences and whether the proofs are the same... Geez, I hope they don't butcher this remake like some other horrors Hollywood has attempted...thoughts? |

The "Pelham" remake is directed by Tony Scott, best know for his action movies with dark scenes, like "Top Gun", "Days of Thunder", "Enemy of The State". Scott paired with Denzel in "Crimson Tide", with Gene Hackman, and is also director of the "Warriors" remake.Scott has some hits, other misses. However, from the pics you showed me, I smell this movie is more like the fake Canadian TV remake than the brillant 1974 movie. Another note I keep forgetting to post. . .the subway entrance and outdoor parking lot at SW corner of 28th Street and Park Ave South are both gone, a new hi rise building is going up now. |

As much as I love Denzel's work, allowing him rewrites tells me that as usual, Travolta was out of control and this film will be compared to Edward Olmos rather than Walter Matthau. Obviously a "pre-clear." :(![]() |

It hasn't been released yet and it already stinks. The current Hollywood MO is to resurrect a classic film or TV program from the past thirty years or so, use today's current crop of actors and maybe even tweak the storyline a bit.The result is a remake that really sucks. None that I can recount that won any Academy Awards or even worthy of. Yes, the rail fans here will get cheap thrills ogling at an R-62A dressed up as an R-142, but that's where it ends. The original Pelham 1-2-3 had something for everybody. Yes, the rail fans got their jollies see an R-22 being hijacked. But also the the non rail fans were treated to an action packed well written and fast paced movie. It boggles my mind as to why Hollywood must remake classic films only to insult them with inferior re-do's. Here is my last two words on current remakes. THEY SUCK ! Bill "Newkirk" Lights, camera, zzzzzzzzz! |

I got the colors mixed up. Sorry. Mr. Green in the 1974 film was the motorman, played by Martin Balsam. IIRC, there are several scenes in which Balsam is shown operating R-22 7439. Was he actually operating, or was the train being pushed when those cab shots were done? |

I will be giving it a chance, but the performances, believability, and the telling of the story will mean more IMO if it's a good movie than the technical accuracy of all the "rail fan-y" details...it'd be nice to get both, but whether this movie measures up or even comes close I think will have more to do with the first one. |

The original Pelham 1-2-3 (although it too has been picked for inaccuracies) included bits of information about the how the TA operated. I found those points interesting, considering I didn't know that much when I first saw it, but I'm sure lots of regular (non-fan) riders would also.A few examples: The beginning with the new C/R: "Front and back. Shuttin' the doors. Rear section first and the first section. And the doors are closed. Now I'm checking my indicator lights to make sure all the doors are locked. I remove my switch key and back out the window for a distance of three car lengths to make sure no one's being dragged. 51st Street next stop; next stop, 51st Street. How'd I do? " "Each car in the IRT is 50 ft long." (not sure if that quote is exact) "Little gizmo known as a dead man's feature" "These are the assignment desks, one for each of the lines. This is the BMT, the IRT." I wonder if the upcoming remake will include similar info in the dialogue. |

As someone who was WORKING there at the time, it doesn't explain "technical squat" either as far as how the TA operated. Neither the so-called "schoolcar" for the n00b conductor, nor pretty much anything as to accurately displaying any aspect of how the TA operated at that time. I won't even bother with the details of the alleged "rigging" would not have moved the train, at least the reverser key actually doing something was accurate, but not on that particular car class without DUMPING it. :)That all said, it was a GREAT movie! However as far as "learning anything" from watching ANY of it, I still cannot to this day even IMAGINE how the MTA coulda gotten their panties in a knot over it. The "information" presented was not only useless, but would get you spotted in a SECOND as "not one of US." But STILL, a *great* flick ... but those of us who served at the time *earned* our belly laughs over the minutae. :) |
