Map Project--IT WORKS NOW! |
|
Posted by Kriston Lewis on Thu Dec 11 20:06:46 2008 Click the map to see it! It works now, It's been tested. (PDF, 1.5 MB) Any comments, criticism, and hate is appreciated! But, seriously, tell me what's wrong, I kind of need to know that sort of thing. And it's not final as of yet. |

It really does look beautiful. If you could find something to put in the upper left, or have Staten Island as a separate map, it would make it look more pleasing to the eye upon first inspection. It's a really nice touch with the notes about stations without entrances. 200-Dyckman on the A is another one with no northbound entrance. If it isn't getting too carried away, I would also recommend listing whether or not a station has a crossunder or not. Since the 1 is soon to no longer be a loop track, I would make it a single line going into the station. It looks bizarre having two separate lines on the PATH out of WTC, especially when they aren't following the same path (no pun). Woodlawn station has a typo on "Jerome" .... what's the story with having the Bx12 line outlined? As far as I could see, none of the other bus lines are..... There's no label for LIC and Hunter's Point LIRR stations...I would also check the layers where the Port Washington/Main line split is. Technically Metropolitan & Lorimer St are separate stations, with a bit of a walk to transfer between them...since it looks like you were doing this with other corridor stations, you might want to fix that for consistency. And a slight nitpick, but it seems like EVERY map does this wrong, including the official map.....the E terminal at Chambers St is on the EAST side of the A/C terminal. There's also inconsistencies with the station dots. What does a black dot in a white circle mean? What does a white circle with a black border mean? Keep up the great work, fellow cartographer! |

Also, last I heard (and according to the current schedule), the W's terminate at 86 St, not Kings Highway.Use a lighter shade of grey for the Franklin Shuttle and LIRR Atlantic Branch. It's indistinguishable from the street roads. You should also label Court St as "Borough Hall-Court St" What's with the purple color you used for the A/C/E? |

"If you could find something to put in the upper left, or have Staten Island as a separate map, it would make it look more pleasing to the eye upon first inspection." I was planning on putting a service box in that area. I may split off Staten Island, but I'm trying not to do that. "It's a really nice touch with the notes about stations without entrances. 200-Dyckman on the A is another one with no northbound entrance. If it isn't getting too carried away, I would also recommend listing whether or not a station has a crossunder or not." I forgot about Dyckman! Thanks. As for crossunders, I may do so, but only through an icon. "Since the 1 is soon to no longer be a loop track, I would make it a single line going into the station." Yeah, this is dated. I will remove the loop before the final version. "It looks bizarre having two separate lines on the PATH out of WTC, especially when they aren't following the same path (no pun)." You mean the WTC loop? "Woodlawn station has a typo on "Jerome" .... what's the story with having the Bx12 line outlined? As far as I could see, none of the other bus lines are....." The Bx12 is highlighted because of SBS. I'll fix my terrible spelling before the final. "And a slight nitpick, but it seems like EVERY map does this wrong, including the official map.....the E terminal at Chambers St is on the EAST side of the A/C terminal." I could swap the locations of main line and the terminal stub. "There's also inconsistencies with the station dots. What does a black dot in a white circle mean? What does a white circle with a black border mean?" Black dot/white circle: all trains stop White circle/black border: local trains only "Keep up the great work, fellow cartographer!" Thanks! How's yours coming along? |

How would it look with a white background for the land portions. I find it difficult seeing the dark blue of the 8th Ave lines and even the dark brown of the J,Z&M. I will only nitpick that you didn't put Ridgewood & Kew Gardens on the map. What you have right now is amazing. |

A very nice map, easy on the eyes and most pleasant to behold.* You have omitted Bushwick-Aberdeen station on the "L". * You should move Montrose Avenue a little to the north. * the reverse curve south of 175th Street on the "A" needs to be better defined. It is 75 degrees leaving the station southbound. * Ditto between Bedford Park and 205 on the "D". Move the line a little further north on Concourse THEN turn it. Your curve should be just shy of 90 degrees. Everything else looks dead on. Very well done indeed. wayne |

I haven't rode the E off peak lately, but a few years back - 2004ish - you had E trains running local to 75 Av on occasion. There wasn't really a rhyme or reason to it, and it wasn't even necessarily the 6 E trains that must terminate at 179 St because Jamaica Center can't handle even 15 tph. |

Yeah - I guess that you could take the suggestion and use an asterisk that the policy on the ground actually in effect might be otherwise?Same dilemma with the G route. Until just after New Year's it will operate as the MTA advertises, but otherwise it will return to just defrauding anyone who believes in the level of service advertised. |

Maybe if the trip actually WAS in Mid-Winter, rather than a week after winter starts.....after finishing the R5 (I haven't decided if I'm gonna stop at Thorn or go all the way to Harrisburg), there's still everything north of Wayne Junction to do, not to mention the various subway lines...I did post a work-in-progress version of my SEPTA map about a month ago, which has the NEC down to Wilmington on it, which is the bulk of that trip. |
