True. And that's why a large commuter rail is tough here. NYC grew with/because of mass transit but even now if you took all the jobs in Manhattan and spread them over the entire metro commuter rail wouldn't work as well.

They should start with converting the Metro Orange Line busway to light rail.

Or you could cheat like CTA does and extend the Red Line at grade, but with the exception of using catenary. The only thing that prohibits this isn't a technology issue, but clearances in the tunnels.

That would be the ideal solution to the Orange Line issue, but I'm not sure if there's enough room for a tunnel portal at North Hollywood -- the station is, after all, quite deep. They'd likely have to rebuild the station to be able to take into account the sharp curve that the Red Line would need to take to be able to continue over the Orange Line route.

Another idea would be to build a light rail line between Warner Center and Pasadena via the Orange Line, Bob Hope Airport, downtown Burbank, downtown Glendale, Eagle Rock, and Old Town Pasadena.

One could always build a tunnel portal further up along the line... :)

I don't think that heavy rail at-grade would be politically popular anywhere in LA. Especially not in the valley.

Not necessarily. Stamford hosts one of the largest trading floors in the world. White Plains, New Haven, Jersey City, Newark, Princeton, Morris county, Mineola all have offices connected by rail with significant reverse commuting.

The difference is the rails were before the offices and not after. La Defense(Paris) and Canary Wharf(London) are both examples of Buisness districts outside the original city core that are supported by rail.

That bypasses alot of areas of the Valley thou...

I assume you're referring to my Warner Center/Pasadena light rail idea? That traverses most of the southern Valley while providing Metro Rail service to Bob Hope Airport, Burbank, and Glendale. But it doesn't serve the northern or central parts of the valley.

To effectively serve the northern part of the Valley, the Red Line could be extended northwards along Lankershim to potentially serve Pacoima/San Fernando/Sylmar, or it could follow the route of the existing Metrolink tracks west toward Chatsworth.

Comprehesive coverage is what will get people out of their cars. Washington DC configures it's suburban bus network around feeding the Metro, I was thinking the same thing with LA.....

Los Angeles has (to an extent) done that in certain places. For example a number of bus routes in the San Fernando Valley converge on the North Hollywood station, and the Norwalk station on the Green Line has a number of LACMTA and Norwalk Transit bus routes serving it. Los Angeles also has the Metro Rapid network of limited-stop bus routes that's proven itself to be quite successful.

Even Port Washington Branch customers are getting affected. 2 e/b trains cancelled! The 5:29 electric from Hunters Point to Ronkonkoma is cancelled but will originate in Jamaica instead. Plus the last train from Hunters Point, the 6:30 to PJ will instead originate at Mineola. That's going to do you a lot of good because if you are not there in time for the previous train you are stranded!

There are some equipment swaps, so you have stuff like a Babylon train comes into NYP, changes ends, and goes out to Great Neck.

I wonder if trains are going to be changing ends at Jamaica, the ones that are originating/terminating there.

Service Alert

Monday, November 24, 2008 9:00 PM
LIRR CUSTOMERS ARE ADVISED TO EXPECT CANCELED TRAINS, DELAYS FOR TUESDAY AM RUSH, NOVEMBER 25

MTA Long Island Rail Road customers are advised to anticipate schedule changes that include canceled trains and delays tomorrow (Tuesday) morning as a result of a derailment that occurred in Jamaica on Sunday.

Over 200 LIRR employees have been working round-the-clock to re-rail the three train cars on the west end of Jamaica Station. The work also includes repair to the damaged switches and track caused by the derailment. Currently, three tracks remain out of service due to the accident.

"We are grateful to our customers for their patience during this time," said LIRR President Helena Williams. "The Monday evening rush hour went smoothly under the circumstances. Our LIRR crews have been working nonstop to repair damaged rail and switches so that we can resume normal operations as soon as is safely possible. We are making progress and will keep our customers updated on our efforts."

The Tuesday AM Rush service plan includes cancellation of 12 westbound AM rush trains. As a result, there will be residual delays from added station stops and not all scheduled connections will be available at Jamaica Station to Penn Station, Flatbush Avenue-Brooklyn, Hunterspoint Avenue, and Long Island City. LIRR station personnel will be available at Jamaica to assist customers with service information. The modified plan also includes service changes for the eastbound AM Rush in particular 9 of the 15 eastbound reverse peak trains from Flatbush Avenue Brooklyn will be canceled.

Westbound AM Peak Service:
The following westbound AM Rush trains will be canceled Tuesday morning in the modified service plan:
· 6:25 AM train from Hicksville, scheduled to arrive in Penn Station at 7:11 AM
· 6:26 AM train from Massapequa Park, scheduled to arrive in Penn Station at 7:22 AM
· 6:57 AM train from Freeport, scheduled to arrive in Penn Station at 7:40 AM.
· 7:23 AM train from Hempstead, scheduled to arrive in Flatbush Avenue at 8:20 AM
· 7:29 AM train from Freeport, scheduled to arrive in Penn Station at 8:13 AM
· 7:40 AM train from Ronkonkoma, scheduled to arrive in Flatbush Avenue at 9:01 AM
· 7:43 AM train from Merrick, scheduled to arrive in Penn Station at 8:31 AM
· 8:03 AM train from Long Beach, scheduled to arrive in Penn Station at 8:54 AM
· 8:03 AM train from Valley Stream, scheduled to arrive in Penn Station at 8:42 AM
· 8:38 AM train from Long Beach, scheduled to arrive in Flatbush Avenue at 9:26 AM

The following trains will terminate in Jamaica Tuesday morning:
· 7:12 AM train from Hempstead, scheduled to arrive in Penn Station at 8:03 AM
· 7:16 AM train from West Hempstead, scheduled to arrive in Flatbush Ave. at 8:03 AM

Eastbound (Reverse Peak) Service:
LIRR eastbound, reverse peak service from Flatbush Avenue, Brooklyn will be extremely limited -- with one passenger train departing the Brooklyn terminal per hour. Customers should consider using Penn Station reverse peak service, which is expected to operate at regularly scheduled times; however customers should anticipate delays en-route.

The following reverse peak trains will operate from Flatbush Avenue on Tuesday morning:
· 5:29 AM train from Flatbush Avenue, scheduled to arrive in Long Beach at 6:22 AM
· 5:52 AM train from Flatbush Avenue, scheduled to arrive in West Hempstead at 6:38 AM
· 6:48 AM train from Flatbush Avenue, scheduled to arrive in Long Beach at 7:36 AM
· 7:51 AM train from Flatbush Avenue, scheduled to arrive in Hempstead at 8:38 AM
· 8:37 AM train from Flatbush Avenue, scheduled to arrive in Hempstead at 9:26 AM
· 9:36 AM train from Flatbush Avenue, scheduled to arrive in Hempstead at 10:28 AM

Service Updates:
The LIRR will continue to update this Service Advisory as track repairs are made. Customers should monitor news media reports and the LIRR's website (at www.mta.info/lirr) for updates to this AM modified service plan and information regarding PM train service.

For up-to-date travel service information, customers can also contact the LIRR's 24-hour Travel Information Center in Suffolk County at 631-231-LIRR, in Nassau County at 516-822-LIRR or in New York City at 718-217-LIRR. The Travel Information Center's TDD telephone number for the hearing impaired is 718-558-3022.
