MTA Renovating R46s?

I just got off of R46 6120 on the (R) and it was nicely renovated with the newly repainted stainless steel ends and door steps, black flooring and the entire set had a new door bell tone that was much higher pitched than the other 4 unrenovated cars in the front. The car also had a "brand new" smell to it, it's nice to see that they're finally fixing up the R46s.

Ends of R46s are fibreglass, not stainless steel.

They're just repainted end bonnets, replacing glass, adding mylar shields, and fixing any outstanding mechanical issues. Nothing too major being done.

I think the same is going on with the R68's as well.

I though I recalled someone saying that the 75ft cars would not be reefed because they do not have the asbestos issues that the 60ft cars have.

Yeah I got on an F train yesterday and I noticed the new floors and most of all, new windows with the plastic covering. That scratchitti and etching was such an eyesore. It's still around on the older trains such as the R32, 38, 40, 42 and 44 but they are gonna be gone soon so it doesn't matter. Although the R44 are getting new windows as well as the 68s

Would kinda defeat the purpose of reefing them wouldn't it? I mean if they cleaned off the asbestos then they could scrap the car for the metal.

It'd seem some asbestos is removed, while what remains is encapsulated in epoxy:
How is asbestos typically dealt with in reef materials?

The EPA recommends removing or encapsulating asbestos material that is exposed, disturbed and deteriorated on materials destined for artificial reefs. Encapsulation with epoxy or other non-water soluble and non-toxic sealer is recommended.

What about the asbestos on the subway cars?

Remaining asbestos material on the subway cars is encapsulated ( e.g., epoxy interior car coating ) and is not considered friable. The danger of asbestos with these (non-friable) types of materials appears to be from grinding, sanding or cutting ( i.e., resulting in release of fibers ). This type of activity is not expected prior to or subsequent to deployment on the reefs.

How much will it cost for New Jersey to deploy subway cars as artificial reefs?

All past and future subway cars received by New Jersey are free of any cost.
