PATCO refurbished cars - where are they? |
|
|
Posted by The Flxible Neofan on Wed Oct 15 23:10:05 2008 Has anyone heard anything about the 12 cars that were allegedly sent away to be rehabbed? Where did they go, and are they coming back anytime soon?I'm curious to see what the final design would be. |

I've read that they'll be stripped to their stainless steel shells and be rebuilt inside as totally new cars. I had not heard that the plans had been finalized or that any cars had ben sent out. |

Their interiors are horribly outdated. I hope they leave the mechanics alone, they're some of the fastest third-rail powered trains I've ever rode. |

PATCO has boasted that this is half the cost of new cars. Given their similarity to the LIRR M-1's, perhaps MTA should have pursued a similar procedure, though a rebuild like that may have meant non-compliance with the latest FRA buff standards. PATCO is not subject to it. |

Given their similarity to the LIRR M-1's, perhaps MTA should have pursued a similar procedure, though a rebuild like that may have meant non-compliance with the latest FRA buff standards.Other standards wouldn't be met too, e.g., windows maybe too small to permit evacuation through them. I would like to see the LIRR M3s overhauled, not rebuilt, but whether that's the right call in fact will depend on the cost per unit of the M9s on an augmented order. Plus, PATCO must be getting a very good price on the rebuilds. Most agencies found overhauls didn't make fiscal sense. In retrospect, e.g., NYCT would probably have been better off retiring most of their fleet and purchasing R62/As and R68/As and maybe a 60' version of the R68/A. Of course, as a trainspotter, I would sorely miss the variety, but money is money. PATCO is not subject to it. They're still subject, ideally, to fiscal reason, but if they can do the rebuild for half the cost of new stock, and obtain the same useful life, that's excellent. |

I can see sprucing up the interiors with new seat coverings, floors, walls, but you know its going to turn out to be another white, bright, sterile, along the lines of an M7 or R-142 style interior with a complete rebuild. I know its outdated, but I don't go for the white, gray, void of color which everything turns out to be now. |

I hope they leave the mechanics alone, they're some of the fastest third-rail powered trains I've ever rode.Get a job, save up, fly out to SFO, and ride BART. Acceleration rates that spank NYCTA, LIRR/MNRR, and PATCO. MAS at 80mph. OTOH, it's headways reek by subway standards, but would spank any commuter rail agency in North America... |

Spend the money on the expensive downtown tunnel, then do the radial lines as surface routes paralleling or using some rail, pipeline, power, or interstate ROW. Don't blow 200 million a mile on extensions into the boonies. |

Half of CPR/VIA’s 54 year old Budd built “Canadian” is still making 250,000 miles a year between Toronto and Vancouver. I saw a photo of the shells stripped and cleaned for overhaul during upgrade to HEP in the 90’s, with the grime off they looked absolutely brand new.Bill |

Umm...BART equipment is UGLY. PATCO equipment looks nice from the side, ad an angle from the front, but the front itself is bland, not necessarily ugly, though. |
