10-car V to Canarsie?

An R160 layup on the center track of the Astoria line tonight had side signs showing:

V 53 St/ 6 Av LCL
V Canarsie LCL
V Canarsie

Since the layups in Astoria are the 10-car R160's, why would this be programmed into them, since 10 car trains can't go to Canarsie? And certainly they wouldn't use only one 5-car set.

I can understand programming this into the 8-car R160's, since the Chrystie cut could one day be used again, and a 6th Avenue train could go to Canarsie via Broadway-Brooklyn.

Aren't the sign programs suited for the proper car types?

No. The R-160A/B's are programmed for all B Division routes. It's just a generic program that's uploaded.

The routing is possible as you describe it. Tons of routing permutations are programmed into the R160. But is interesting to see that particular routing because it implies that a "V" to Canarsie could be a real route in the future.

The (V) would follow the route of the K line onto the J line and then hang a right at B'Way Junction. Of course, it had better be a 480' V train and not have any of those pesky R-46s on it.

Not only that, but the V crews would need to be CBTC qualified, otherwise all these "foreign" crews would mess up the L going into Rockaway Parkway.

A train of 8 BMT steels is 536 ft long. A train composed of 1 4 car R-160 unit and 1 5 car R-160 unit, 9 cars in total should be able to fit the Eastern Division platforms.

Would it be feasible to put a 9-car revenue train together from an R160A1 and an R160A2 set?

Possible, of course. Feasible - except that there are not enough 4-car links to do it without shorting the east. Part of the Otion II order is 16 additional 4-car links to fill out the L Line.

One of the advantages of the R-160 design is that if additional 4 car units are needed to implement a 9 car service, one of the non operating cars can be pulled out of a 5 car unit to make it a 4.
