Lets take the trip....Addison is a new island station, concrete structure for track 2, steel elevated for track 3. A southbound Red line approaches, the picture says it all.

Photobucket

Belmont has three new tracks open now as part of the Brown Line Expansion. A meet in both directions.

Photobucket

Fullerton's construction is ahead of schedule though the hot dog stand is gone. Passengers anticipate an arriving NB Red line.

Photobucket

Chicago and State, Magnificent Mile shows off the horseshoe shape of Chicago's two subways. Our camera caught the third rail flash from a departing red line train.

Photobucket

Lake and yes the world's record continuous platform is no more. It's that dark area where the Washington station used to be. The airport connector would be cut in there, but that project is on hold.

Photobucket

Roosevelt...the flat ceiling tells us this was cut and cover construction.

Photobucket

Cermack/Chinatown...that raised bascule bridge in the background is an icon to railfans. Drifting in through the interlocking that leads up to the Orange line and the Loop "L" is a southbound Red line train.

Photobucket

Sox/ 35th...That's the "Cell" in the background, across the eight lanes of I-94, I-90, AKA the Dan Ryan Expressway. The rear markers are on the only car type operated on the Red line, the 2600 series cars.

Photobucket

Comments and questions welcomed as always. Gamewise, we did take one step back, but tomorrow is another day. Plus this really isn't about just the ball game...just a reason for more pictures. Yeah!!

Thanks. Well that makes the score on the last pic "one to one." When the Dan Ryan expressway opened back in the 60s, that stretch was billed as the "world's largest expressway, four lanes in the express and three in the locals. Since then other routes have wrested that title.

Video yes...photo no. And I'm way, way behind uploading to U Tube and I've got lots of juicy stuff too. The original platform had eight entrances and seven platforms in between and a third of a platform beyond the Lake ST entrance. There were two lower level passageways over to subway number 2 that descended below. One was lost constructing the Block 37 building. Thinking was back in the 30s was that station stops could be adjusted, and maybe even doubled up if traffic level ever went that high. Many of the Loop "L" stations had 16 car length platforms so trains could berth behind each other. Probably impossible in today's age of cab signalling although you will notice "berth markers" in some of my current shots even though the State ST subway has the latest bi-directional type of cab signals and the waysides form the 40s are long gone. Note: those waysides were Chicago's first block signals. The CTA did create a new station...Lake ST making for four and stopping locations were adjusted for the other three so as to load in both directions to make it seem safer in off hours. The southern-most platform has been bricked in and used for maintenance storage. Washington is currently closed as a station.

Right & I still love how the transit is *right there* sitting evenly with the highway and pedestrian pathways.... (here NY we're used to the transit being overhead or down under).

Would love to get back there someday and ride that stretch where teh Blue is amidst teh Danny Ryan!!!
