Haven't seen that before.

Apparently they're washing the R32s again; I've seen some shiny ones lately.

The brown diamond "R" is on the R46 and R44(?) as the end rollsigns are compatible with the R40 and R42. Some here believe that R46s were occasionally used on the Nassau Street "R". I think I rode one once into Broad Street but it's 20+ years ago so my memory may be faulty.

R-46s couldn't have run on the Nassau St R since BMT Eastern Division platforms cannot berth a 600 ft train.

I remember hearing somewhere that R44 and R46 can travel the Nassau Street line as far as Chambers St and on the spur that ends just before the Manhattan Bridge.

The cars themselves can fit but since all of the R-44s and most of the R-46s are configured in 4 car units, the liklelihood of a 6 car train of R-46s making it to 95 St is small indeed especially since it would have to originate from Jamaica Yard and S/B service from Queens would require a 600 ft train and a 600 ft trai as I said before will not berth anywhere in the Eastern Division.

i'd imagine that woulda been the M if M weren't the M. R from 95 st via 4 av thence to nassau st. and then what? to jamaica? to metropolitan ave? or go to canal st and then get on the chrystie st connection to go to midtown via 6 ave line, then via the V train routing to continental? is that move even possible?

It is my understanding that the old brown diamond R Bankers Trains only ran a few trains solely during rushhours. And those trains ran along time ago. I think about 1967 to 1970. Or that time period. I would guess there were a few trains that were left at Coney Island for that purpose.

Likely when the trains terminated at Chambers Street, they probably turned on the spur track north of the station then deadheaded back to Brooklyn.

They ran later than that and what is interesting about the service pattern is that at that time the RRs ran to Astoria and 4 PM layups ran light to the H tracks N/O Chambers St for storage. In the AM, these trains operated S/B in service to 95 St where they became the N/B AM bankers' specials to Chambers St. There, all but one laid up on the H tracks. The remaining one ran light to Fresh Pond Yd and came back S/B and went into service at Chambers St along with the others that hed been laid up there midday.

They can travel much further than that..

They can travel over the bridge along the Bway el...to ENY..
Also over the Myrtle El to Metropolitan...

They can, but the Nassau St. R almost never terminated at Chambers St as the maps of the time showed. Almost all went to/from Eastern Pkwy or Metropolitan Ave.

By 1986 almost all of them originated/terminated at Metropolitan Ave. In the final months you probably saw more diamond R's on the Myrtle Ave line than actial M's during rush hours.

There is a problem at the Bkln end of the Willy B which prevents 2 trains of 75 ft cars from passing each other at that point so in the rare event that a train of 75 footers has to operate into the Eastern, all operating personnel have to be notified to prevent a possible sideswipe even with a train of 60 footers passing in the opposite direction.

Atually the bankers' specials which in early years carried the "RR" designation did terminate and lay up at Chambers St because I worked there from my time as a Tw/M, M/M and T/D and was directly involved with those services.

I used to get that special on the PM tour as a conductor. the jobs reported to Essex Street and the trainwas laid up somewhere between Canal Street and Bowery. IIRC, we used to go north to Essex St. to turn back southbound and go into service at Chambers.
