Amtrak - Coach vs Business Class

Hi guys, I'll be flying with my wife to Syracuse this winter to accompany her on a business trip and want to ride amtrak to the city. It looks to be about a 5 hour trip from SYR to NYP and the cost will be about $50.00 each way coach class. For an addit $26.00 I can upgrade to business class. Does anyone have any experience with upgrading, is it worth an extra 50%? Thanks

You get free water and, generally speaking, a pretty empty car (ie, no screaming brats). That's been my experience. Oh and eletric outlets at every seat.

Coach = Steerage class....hardly any rats, though!! :-D
Business Class = Hangin' with John Jacob Astor and the rich snobs :-D

Just kidding, if you want to just sit back, relax and enjoy the ride and scenery, stick with Coach, plus you will save a few bucks. And hey I have ridden Coach class on Amtrak plus have deadheaded on Amtrak trains on the NH Line between Stamford and NH, and I can say for coach, it is still pretty nice and relaxing.

If you wanna play around on the laptop with a little more luxury, so to speak, plus sneak a few looks at some nice looking business women (don't worry looking ain't cheating....I am happily married but do look when I am out!! Looks at the menu, but goes home to eat, here!! ;-))than go Business Class. Either way, you will have a good ride. Amtrak is more an awesome way to go than many give it credit for.

Business class means sitting closer to the engine with walking penii with ears :D Seriously, it's a bit more civilized, as Surf pointed out, there are outlets and free water and corporal punishment is allowed if anyone acts up. They usually place the cafe car directly behind the business class car on the NE Regional, so it's a short walk for eats and drinks. I presume it's that way on other Amtrak trains, too.

I dunno, screw it, it's 26 bucks; do it one way to experience it.

It's roomier. More leg space. Seats recline farther back.

Business Class = Long Haul Coach

So if you were to make your trip in coach on the Lake Shore Limited, it would be more or less the same thing for no upgrade charge.

Except Business Class sometimes involves free sodas.

Why take the plane? A true railfan would take the train if he/she had time to spare. Yes...I agree it is a long trip, but worth seeing the ROW and the view from a train vs. a plane. When I went to Montreal, I could have taken a plane there from JFK, but I chose not to instead I wanted to see the sights along the route in upstate NY.

Because the LSL takes 18 hours to get there. A plane can do it in 3 hours. I'm a big railfan, but 18 hours in a metal box is just too much.

Again....to each his/her own.....whatever works for the individual. Yes...some would feel "cabin fever" stuck on the train, but some just love the views that a train has to offer.

I once took AMTRAK from Penn Station to Montreal.
I snuck to the back car to take pics from the back window all the way up.
It was a long 8 hour trip. But it was worth it for all the pics I took.

I don't sleep 8 hours in any environment, but I've slept quite comfortably aboard an Amtrak Sleeper. Don't underestimate that train motion effect and in years prior, that clickety clack of the track, Jack.

I've only seen them in pictures, but it seems cramped and uncomfortable to me.

And we're only talking about those who upgrade to sleepers. Many do the 18 hours from a coach chair. Oy!

That has not been my experience. I have been stuck on some coach cars that have no outlets. In business class outlets are guaranteed.

Hmm, I don't know why the previous post came out blank...

Anyway, I'll have to respectfully disagree -- 99% of all Amtrak trains I've been on have had outlets, and if one Coach car doesn't have them then there's probably another one in the train with them.

As coaches are overhauled, they get outlets installed at each seat.
Of the Amfleet 1 coaches, 15 might not have outlets at every seat, while the other 273 have gone through an overhaul for which every seat will have an outlet.
Of the 15 which havn't been rebuilt, some may have had the outlets retrofitted.

Now that the Palmetto was cut back to Savannah, and the Silver Star serves Tampa, there is no business class.
The Amfleet II cars assigned to the star are some of the nicest in the amtrak fleet, but if you have the money, Sleeper is much nicer.

Wasn't much different from COACH CLASS...

It depends on what type of business class car you get. The Type of Buisiness Class car on the Carolinian is used as a coach class car on the Crescent. The Buisiness Class car on the Vermonter is nicer then the First Class car on an Acela Express (if you arent stuck facing backwards)

You can often get them for much cheaper.
(I have seen as low as 120 for the 3 day trip from Chicago to Seattle)
It depends on how many people have reserved, and how many people amtrak expects to ride.

I would if reasonable. I think of how much it'd cost to drive, if I did stop overnight on the way, food, gas, etc etc, and compare that with a roomate with meals included. If you can and you only get to do it once every 50 years, why not.

True, but if a rail alternative were possible, it'd probably take you 7-9 days. Maybe 6 with HSR.

I didn't have the guts to do the 9 day Paris - Vladivostok trip when I was in my twenties. I don't think I will do an even longer trip (10 - 12 days?) even if such option were available. :)

Maybe after I'm retired, I will re-think the Trans-Siberian.

Not always, on many Empire trains and the Pennsylvanian BC in the last car. I am going BC out to Pittsburgh to I can get a railfan window.

Free bottled water or free fountain water? If this hasn't changed, I remember being able to get tap water in the coach division as well.

It's bottled as opposed to "potable" ... southbound, it's city water from Syracuse which isn't all that bad (hint of chlorine, but not much) and northbound from NYC, it's NYC water ... MANY cars (besides business class) now have electrical outlets depending on the consist, but you may have to walk through a few before you spot one ...

I've DONE business class, and there's a bit more legroom, but the legroom on the AMcans ain't so bad either. HERE is what you REALLY need to consider ... between ALBANY and NYC, the train usually MOVES. Between SYR and ALB however, you're at the mercy of CSX freight ... and sometimes you can be MORE than an hour late due to it. Comfort while you're sitting on a siding is the key ... and no, hate to say it, business class on Empire is probably NOT worth the extra expense. However, you're GAMBLING in "coach" as to which cars in the consist actually HAVE outlets under the windows. MANY do on the "Lake Shore" and other "west of Smallbany trains" anyway ... but it's a roll of the dice.

Be governed accordingly. :)

The consist of Northeast Regional trains was recently changed to place the cafe car in the middle of the train, so business class passengers now have to walk through three steerage class cars to reach it.

Oy to you maybe, but not to me. I've done TRE to CHI (when the Three Rivers was in service) a number of times in Coach (never in a Sleeper Car) and a majority of the time there was nobody in the seat next to me for most of the trip (both ways). After the Three Rivers was discontinued, I started using the LSL from NYP to CHI (just completed a round trip NYP-CHI trip earlier this month); also on these trips(in Coach; never in a Sleeper Car), generally, I've had the seat next to me be empty most, if not all, of the trip (both ways).

Now I always do a round trip on Amtrak to CHI from NYP (in the fall each year) unless I can't spare the 36 hr round trip time for some reason. I have more room in Coach on Amtrak than sitting on a plane plus I don't have to worry about spending extra time getting to an aiport and going through security. Amtrak to CHI is generally cheaper as well from NYP than a plane is from any of the NY area airports. Give me Amtrak anyday!!

As Selkirk said about CSX between ALB and SYR, I'll agree there. CSX should get their act together so Amtrak trains can get through that territory without any big delays.

If you want a real fun trip you could do LA-Sydney, then work your way north through Southeast Asia, and China as this woman did back in 2001. Her experience on the southern branches of the Trans-Siberian railroad is probably one the tour companies that book such trips would prefer to keep quiet.
