When the MTA was formed in 1968,the rolling stock had a blue stripe on a stainless steel body, much like the R40's,and BUDD M1's,however the cars made of the heavier steel did not get the blue stripe on a silver body untill about 1970,71. |

It was okay, except for the R-9's. They looked awful in service on the "KK" route in that new paint scheme. They should have been left alone. |

I thought it looked pretty good. It's just that the silver and blue paint scheme coincided with the outbreak of the graffiti epidemic, so you didn't see the paint scheme itself for very long.I never saw any R-7/9s in that scheme, though. IMHO they should have been left alone. IIRC only the cars on the Three Stooges Division were repainted. The old timers that stayed on the IND never were. |

The BEST paint scheme ever was the original BMT Lines orange and blue on the Q-types. The second best were the BMT bluebirds followed closely by the 1964 IRT Flushing line World's Fair scheme. Anything the MTA came up with - in a word - sucks - by comparison. |

I remember that olive drab paint on them. The R-27/30s had it, too. On the IRT, the R-21s, R-22s, R-26s and R-28s were decked out in that green shade as well. |

R36, and R33 "Worlds Fair" cars had the best design in paint scheme followed by the R10 in its second scheme. If the R44, and R46 was either delivered with an all stainless look, or kept the way they were, they wouldn't look that bad today. The R44's, forget about it! R42's as delivered should of never had the blue stripe added at all in the beginning. Lets all admit to one thing, upon GOH, things should of gone back to sorta original condition on the stainless steel SMEE's! |

What was interesting, none of the Arnines that got the silver/blue ever had the "M" logos attached. At least I haven't seen it in any of the pics I've view at nycsubway.org (granted I haven't looked at every single one). |

That was basically the R-36 World's Fair paint scheme and it was also going to be used on the R-38s if they had been regular steel instead of stainless. For a painted car, it was probably one of the best paint schemes that the TA ever came up with. |

Just as an aside, has anyone out there ever seen the North Shore Line's "silverliners?" These were standard North shore interurban cars that were painted silver below the window line with "ribbing" painted into the silver paint to simulate the corrugation of genuine stainless steel. The optical illusion was so effective, that tou could not tell the difference betwwen the paint and real stainless until yo were almost close enough to touch the car. These cars were repainted to be used by the North Shore as replacements for the Electroliner in the event one of the Electroliners had to be taken out of service for repairs or maintenance. What I would have done, if I were TA pres, with the GOH steel cars would have been tp paint them in a simulates stainless steel finish, retrofit those cars not already equipped with vent windows like some of the redbirds got, air conditioned the R-27s/30s and provided a fleet of standard (pre R-40) design of R-27s through 38s full compatible with each other so that if the had to operate in mixed trains they would look relatively good together mich like PATH. On the IRT trains of faux stainless steel cars would have also looked pleasing to the eye as well. What I'm actually describing in essence is an MTA paint scheme sans the blue stripe. On the other hand, if the graffiti epidemic had not taken hold and the MTA silver/blue paint scheme had not been ruined, then I would have opted for painting the blue stripe on all the TA's subway equipment including the R-32s through slant 40s. I still would have opted for all GOH cars to be fully operable in mixed trains should the need arise. |

I don't think the R27,30,30A series were rebuilt with air-conditioning because the cars would be to heavy to operate.Plus, how long their "regular" steel bodies would hold up was also in question, making the rebuild process a waste of time, effort, and money. |

But if you think that it's a major accomplishment to know more than someone else about the subway system, well, you've set your goals awfully low. The R-10s through 40s (excluding some R-32As) were also owned by th city rather than the TA/MTA and they received MTA logos. The problem with the R-9s was lack of a clear space without rivets to place a logo sticker. |
