R160's A/C sucks! |
|
|
Posted by R33/R36 mainline on Mon Aug 4 10:33:13 2008 Today i was riding an POS R160 on the Q line and the A/C sucks. Not to mention the car smelled like piss. When i walked inside the train didn't feel no cold air. And as the train was going along NO air was coming out the vents. Also 160's rock and sway side to side when going to down the brighton line, smoother ride my ass. Also 160's trucks do bump into the car bodies at times. Every 160 Q train that i ride has something wrong with it, if its not the FIND being stuck its the A/C is not working right. Also 160s are starting to squeal and screech when coming to a stop. These cars are not worth two cents of that 2.2 million each that they spend on buying them. The R68A's are much better than these 160 crappers. At least with the 68A's you can feel air coming out, with the 160's you can't feel shit. |

Well, it *was* 65° outside this morning, so I would have thought that the train would feel warmer when you stepped into it.And I wouldn't want to go about feeling shit either, piss is bad enough. There were no R-160s before NYCT gave Kawasaki (and Alstom) the contract! What would there have been to test?Besides, the R-160 is supposed to be identical (or nearly so) to the R-143, which WAS built by Kawasaki. So if there WAS a test, that was it! David |

The piss smell can happen anywhere, not the fault of the R-160. The ride isn't any worse than the R-68A's, but the whole "air-bag suspension" stuff might be overrated. Occasionally HVAC's don't work right and you get hot cars. In this case, move to another car at the next station, or if nobody's looking pass through. The FINDs have definitely been a problem on the R-160Bs and I've noticed most I've seen have been frozen or on the wrong stop. But you're wrong about the A/C's, they're usually quite cool and you can feel the air coming out. They do screech and sometimes loudly when stopping, but I don't think it's a big deal. Some of the R-32s do a lot more screeching. |

R68A's don't have annoying populsion sounds or loud annoying HAVC noise. 68A's have a more laid back calm feel to them, wheres the 160's have an loud in your face feel to them. And MOST 160's that i ride on the Q so far have this A/C problem, if i try to move to another car it will probaly be just the same. And screehing on the 160's is a big deal, people make a big deal when the 32's break screech, so why can't i make a big deal about 160 brakes screeching???? |

You may be right to some extent, but the HVAC isn't loud when you're inside and definitely an improvement from the R-142s. You don't know if the A/C will be the same in the next car or even two or three cars down unless you try. Generally, I've found the R-160s A/Cs to be cool and comfortable, and I think this case was an exception. The screeching IS NOT a big deal with the R-160s nor the R-32s. All of you are wrong and should stop complaining. :P But seriously, maybe you're going into the R-160s hating them from the start, so you pick out everything in it to bother you in some way. At the same time you could go into an R-32, or a few years ago an R-33 and R-36 Mainline and ignore all signs of rust or w/e else. I don't want to sound like you-know-who on here, but try riding an R-160 with a positive attitude. Otherwise you might as well join Phil D, because this is starting to remind me of some of the stuff he came up with. |

They were a welcome relief after standing in the Herald Square Sauna. As an extra bonus, the R40 A/Cs peed on you.Just goes to show that not everything in the R160 works at the same time. I've not been proven wrong yet! |

I just got off 9022 on the (N) last night and my experience was the exact opposite of yours. The train was nice and cold, had that "brand new" smell to it, and gave a smooth ride from 34th St all the way down to 59th/4th. Although, OTOH, the FIND was stuck on the (W)'s Northbound routing starting at Whitehall St.I also happened to ride an R32 on the (E) in the morning and it was ok as it got me from Point A to Point B but the A/C was dismal, it was loud as expected, it screeched the moment the brakes were applied, and most of the lights were out on the train car, but it was ok though as it got me where I needed to go. |
