Northeast Corridor Rail Service Shut Down in N.J.TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- The evening commute in New Jersey just got a lot rougher. NJ Transit says the busy Northeast Corridor in and out of New York has been shut down after Amtrak reported low voltage on the line at about 4:35 p.m. Wednesday. NJ Transit spokesman Dan Stessel said the agency pulled all trains into the nearest station after the alert. Stessel wasn't sure what had caused the problem, when it would be fixed or whether it extended beyond New Jersey. ... Stessel said the agency's North Jersey Coast Line was also out of service. He said arrangements had been made to cross-honor train tickets with PATH and NJ Transit buses. |

There might be a train at every NEC station.I can imagine how NWK Pen might be right now. Every track might be used up right now in the station. People heading to NY are lucky if they get as far as NWK Penn, they can just simply hop on PATH. |

AMTK trains are not late unless they are more than 24 hours behind schedule. Not quite.... Depends on how long the run is. A train traveling 250 miles or less reaching the terminal within 10 minutes of the timetable is on time. A train traveling over 550 miles reaching the terminal within 30 minutes of the timetable is on time. The 30 minute differential is the largest allowed. |

RVL train 5737 (the 5:37 pm from Newark to High Bridge) had many people with Northeast Corridor passes/tickets riding to places like Dunellen and Bound Brook. That train actually left Newark on time, but was held for 10 minutes at Aldene due to the incompetence of the Conrail North Jersey dispatcher. |

Well, let's just say there was no freight traffic at the time, plus there was plenty of time for us to get by before the next eastbound (5746) went through. They try to pull this crap quite often. It's incredible, because 5737 is an express to Westfield, with 900+ passengers on board. Waiting there for no valid reason defeats the whole purpose of an express. |

They could always rebuild the "Elizabeth Industrial Track" and reroute freights that way out of Oak Island. Build up a connection at Aldene and then there wouldn't be any need for gantlet tracks on the Lehigh Line anymore. But since the Aldene Plan, how could they not take advantage of the elevated line . . . ? (the Elizabeth Industrial has one grade crossing, at the former Lorraine station location.) |
