R via the V line GO Observations

Went out yesterday and observed this advisory to the extent. Two things I noticed was:

1. Switched to the express track before West 4th Street (Was not surprised it did)
2. Passengers seemed confused (Tried to explain to a bunch of tourists on what was going on)

In the process, I made a couple of photo stops along the way. Here is the stations that I made stops (from south to north):

1. Grand Street (spur of the moment)
2. Broadway-Lafayette
3. 34th Street
4. 47th-50th Street
5. 53rd Street-Lexington Avenue (spur of the moment)

Overall, this has to be one of the most interesting GO's I've done in the last 4 1/2 years.

I haven't seen anything about the deatils of this GO here. Can you share with us where the Rs were actually running and how the service actually ran?

Thanks, in advance.

I'm kind of pissed now. I want an explanation as to why the (D) can't do that instead of running via Eighth Avenue.

I'm guessing that is because of the way the F and the D come into 47-50th streets, though there probably is some other reason.

Southbound (R) trains ran regular from Forest Hills - 71 Avenue to Queens Plaza, then switched from Track D1 to Track D3. Ran via 53rd Street Tunnel from Queens Plaza to Fifth Avenue - 53 Street. Then via Track B1 from 47-50 Streets - Rockefeller Center to West 4 Street - Washington Square. Then via Track B3 to Grand Street, over the Manhattan Bridge, then back to regular route at DeKalb Avenue.

But NB service is normal route, via Montague Tunnel and Broadway BMT NB, correct?

And I assume the reason for this is due to track work on the SB connection between Queens Plaza and the 60th Street Tunnel, correct?

The "R" switched from the local track to the express track before it got to W 4th Street. Southbound local track has no access to switch to express track south of W 4th Street. This is why "D" can't switch over.

I read that it was due to track work at Times Sq on the Broadway Line.

Negative, there's work on the Broadway Line near Times Square - 42 Street. (N) and (Q) trains have to go local, and I guess they figure three local services is too much, so they rerouted the (R). Forgot why they did it southbound only.

When the D line has to run in two sections, southbound D's have to run via 8th Avenue. The 8th Avenue to 6th Avenue switches are south of West 4th Street. In addition, you can only switch amongst local services. If there was a switch north of Broadway-Lafayette, then you wouldn't need to have the D run in two sections.

I'll try again: Why can't the (D) operate on the local track between 42nd Street and West Fourth Street?

If the D has to run in 2 sections. that means that whatever work being done is on B-3 tk between 59 st and 34 St thus it is THAT section of track that the D can't use.

Thanks.

Everytime someone brings up having the D run local on Sixth Avenue, someone always chimes in and says it's impossible, even though there switches that allow it.

Strange, technically couldn't they just cut the N to like 36th or 59th in Brooklyn and have the Q run all the way up to Astoria and allowing the R to run normal. thus keeping it 2 locals on Broadway?

Its bad enough with Murphy Tower just jacking us Deltas up left and right now you want them to relay at 36th Street thus making us go Local or sit when that November in the relay postion on F4 track takes his/her time to change ends?

No thanks my friend heh heh..

or 59th in Brooklyn

No switches at 59th and 4th Ave for a move like that you can only turn back south at 36th Street from F4 to F3 Track then back to F1 Track, the Romeo Shuttle does it there not to mention you cant stop at 53rd or 45th streets Northbound when that happens.

and have the Q run all the way up to Astoria

Then you are talking about a lot of reassigned personel on both Lines i dont think they want to do it for one line perhaps like they do on the Charlie.

As well as Switching T/O's, Platfrom C/R's,G.O C/R's and T/O's, extra TWO's Dispt's...

See all of that?
