It means that the temperature checkers use it to point the laser on them, to get a temp. reading!

Looks like they are targets for an IR-style 'gun' thermometer to hit, to keep measurements relatively consistent.

Curious thing is that if that's the case, I wonder why there isn't at least one target lower in the car to guard against the layering problem. A few years back, that happened on Flushing Line R62A trains, which ended up feeling very cold at the level where most of the bodies on the train were located, because the heat was being blown in from the vents on the ceiling running along the car, instead of the traditional thing for older NYCT cars, which has been for heating panels located at foot level to do some of the heating work. Mostly is was just accumulated body heat on those trains. I believe that this has been corrected, or at least I haven't experienced for some years now.

For RTO, it is where the RCI is to point his lazer gun at when he does an air conditioning survey on the cars. No I don't want to see one of those stickers for sale on EBay!

When I first saw them, I thought they were some sort of illegal sticker (a/k/a glued graffiti) that folks had put there. When I started seeing them on virtually every car, in more or less the same place, I realized they were some sort of official thing, but I also thought to myself- "why does the TA need to tell it's repair personnel where the AC units are? They should know."

Thanks to your post, I now understand their purpose. It does make sense.

How do you know there are not lower targets? Did you look.
Maybe they are under the seats?

I wonder what temperature is set for SEPTA's ETB's?
It's feel like 65 degrees inside to me. That A/C unit really pumps out cold air!

You must have rode 802. That thing is a rolling icebox. On a hot, humid day that bus will freeze your sweat solid.

They've been using the star and triangle labels for quite some time, why not another? I guess it's speeds things up if the inspectors are shooting around trying to find the best place to check.

All the ETB's are akin to "Meat lockers", at least they feel that way to me. IMHO,they are set too cold. Then the HVAC system shuts off for 3 seconds, and people think the coach died.

No they take three readings. I saw the guy who I beleive is a traffic checker with clipboard and IR thermometer get on at R46 E train at 23rd Ely. He took a reading on the southend, middle and north end of the car and wrote them down on his clipboard.
68.8, 68.6 and 68.4 is what I thought I saw as he got off with me at Lex and went to the next car.

That might be the temp where the cool air comes out, but after it comes down a few inches......it gets sucked up by the hot air.
