I like the fact that the NYC Subway Calendar has 367 days this year. More days to enjoy the great pictures. BTW I have 3 of my photos in this year's MSR calendar, and I will have 3 more in the 2009 calendar. MSR Calendar |

It's Milan, and the system went to pantographs when the new LRV's arrived. They were supposed to replace the Witts, but the public liked the Witts, so they went back in service. The overhead was reworked for the pans (no overhead frogs at switches and crossings) so the Witts got pans. |

The Witts did get pans in the 1970s, but not for the reason stated. It was a plan to eliminate conductors that led to conversion to pantogragh. As for getting rid of the Witts, the Sirio were supposed to do that. But the Sirio are so unreliable and the Witts so reliable, that they will soldier on for probably 10 more years. They're truly a Milanese icon. And rapidly becoming a San Francisco icon, as well. Milantram. |

I don't think I've seen any Milan shots from the period showing pans instead of poles.I've always felt pans are overkill for urban streetcars/trams. If you've seen the Oporta single truckers in Memphis with pans? Uck! Some consultant recommended it, the pans are so big they are as long as the carbody. |
