Earlier this year, the LIRR purchased more than 1,000 cell phones and issued them to train crews (conductors, assistant conductors, and collectors) as part of a multi-pronged effort to keep customers and crews updated on train delays or emergencies. How many people dismissed this as a waste of money? I bet that woman is grateful both for this managerial decision, as well as the action by the assistant conductor. |

Regular "two way" radios are more practical and easier to use. Instead of Mr. Chino calling the ticket collector, who in turn, had to notify the engineer, if Mr. Chino had a radio all he had to do was use it to tell the engineer himself. However, if the LIRR finds it too costly to provide every trainman with a radio, then the phones are the next best thing. At NJ Transit, some trainmen have radios while everyone has Nextel phones. |

Whale... *MY* radio (digital, encrypted) costs $2500.00, so yes, cell phones would be much less expensive, not to mention that a radio requires a network of land based repeaters. *MY* radio was purchased for us with funds from the Department of Homeland Security.Martz Bus used to have radios, now the drivers use cell phones for company business. The cell phone comes with all the towers and repeaters that you need to use the device anywhere. Mars Station this is Martz Bus 507 approaching Asteroid 5E302, there are back ups entering the Lincoln Wormhole. ROAR |
