A train buff has a healthy interest in trains.A foamer has an unhealthy obsession with trains. A train buff passes his love and knowledge of trains on to new generations by letting a child look out of the RFW. A foamer hogs the RFW and ignores a child who may want to look out that RFW. A train buff always follows the laws and the rules even when the laws and rules are stupid. A foamer will sometimes disregard necessary and common-sense rules if they get in the way of his obsession. That about sums it up well. |

A train buff usually wouldn't stand out in a normal crowd, as he/she dresses well, BATHES, gets regular haircuts, etc. A foamer wears clothes that used to fit him in the 60's (but now the bottom of his belly sticks out). His T-shirt has some worn out old photo of a train that was popular in the 60's, but is so faded you can't see it, what with the holes in the shirt too. He also smells, and his hair looks like some greasy mop. |

That would be the usual case on NYCT since the employee payroll week starts on Sundays. The only possible exception might be that trains would start operating into a new station or new line before passengers are carried there to familiarize crews and conform to the scheduled starting time of the pick. |

I know that years repeat every 28 years within a century and 400 years otherwise, and that the calendar starts 1 day later every year and 2 days later following a leap year, therefore 5 days every 4 years (and 15 days, therefore 1 day every 12 years). And 4/4, 6/6, 8/8, 10/10 and 12/12 all occur on the same day of week. |

If someone doesn't follow a stupid rule, that means that can't be a train buff??? That's idiotic. If the stupid rule in question is the "no passing between cars" rule then train buffs, foamers and everyday passengers alike disregard it on a regular basis. One can have no interest in trains whatsoever and break that particular rule. My little summary was based on casual and generic observations between two categories of people (train buffs and foamers) who have a lot in common yet demonstrate sharply different behavior when actually railfanning. It is obviously not scientific. I'm sure there are train buffs who also happen to be murderers, rapists, child molesters, tax cheats, hackers and drug dealers but those crimes ane not related to their hobby. In other words, a train buff tends to behave like an ordinary passenger (including the minor rule-breaking done regularly by ordinary passengers) when riding the rails. A foamer tends to stand out and in extreme cases may even cross the line and engage in something dangerous (see Darius or a certain notorious young SubChatter). |

The reason more railfans likely ride subway trips is that the subway has greater exposure and thus more fans. Plus there are a lot more subway trips to keep interest high. The number of lire trips is tiny in comparison afaik. I doubt price has much to do with anything - compare MOD prices with lirr trip prices. |

Did those snobbish old timers on the JFK express look down at me! How many times at the end of my job on the cruddy B the TD would have me, the rookie, lay up a JFK consist north of the station. That was fun laying up on the hill hoping the handbrakes would hold on all 3 cars in case of a power interruption. Equally fun in walking back to the station up that steep grade. |
