PHOTOS - My Take On This Wassaic Trip

This trip was Awwwwwsome. Nice day, great folks and a bonus FL-9 sighting made this one of the best trips ever for this railfan. Even the dog-assed M7a crapping out on us didn't rain on our trip. It actually made for a nice unexpected photo op, as I hadn't seen an FL-9 in Brewster since 1979.

We knew we had dibs on the day when we saw the red, white and black coming toward us.

BarOOOstah!

I can see why they do this; take 2 unpredictable locos, put them together and if one fails the other can pull the train. No bustitution that way.

Swell group and can't ask for a better photo prop.

At southeast before we switched to an electic.

Switching gears as we ended the trip at Harlem-125.

Meets like this happen all the time during the week but rare on weekends.

As usual, there's an album for a trip like this.

Thanks for looking and thanks to everyone who attended. I had an awesome time and hope you did, too. I look forward to the next adventure.

your pal,
Fred

Nice photos. You got lucky, and those Fl9s are more appealing than M7s for sure. Another plus was that the FL( was in front of the P40. Though i don't know if you can say the M3s are much more appealing than M7s, but i like the BUDDs more.

I have a question: I know that el is in harlem, but which subway line can bring me to that elevated station?

To reach Harlem-125th take the Lexington Ave uptown to 125th St, walk a block west and there you are.

ok thanks. Is MNRR an expensive railroad to ride, like a few stops or so? Is it under 4 dollars, or costly like NJT?
Like NJT, which is very costly, even off peak. Makes you woonder how they can't make ends meet.

If you ride MN or LIRR within the city limits on weekends, there is a special ticket you can buy. It's called CityTicket.

I think the same thing is used on LIRR, but you can use it even in Long Island, not just within sity limits. Do you mean within state limits?

I never rode MNRR or Amtrak though, but i have a feeling both are costly. Amtrak i know is costly for sure.

The CityTicket is valid for travel on MN or LIRR within the NYC limits (Wakefield, Riverdale, Oueens Village, and somewhere east of Flushing on the Port Wash are as far as it will take you). You buy it like any regular MN or LIRR ticket. I've used it a few times.

No, MN isn't costly like Amtrak is, but you def want to ride off peak. For instance, New Haven to GCT is 14 bucks one way. I can ride New Haven to Stamford for $6 or so and NH to Bridgeport is about $3.25. Like Ken posted, you can get a City Ticket for $3.25 one way and ride from, say, GCT to Riverdale on the Hudson line, or GCT to Wakefield on the Harlem line (nothing on the New Haven line). Those round trips would cost you $6.50 and provide a few stop ride in each case.

Fred

I'm not sure where it ends on that branch, other then it is east of Flushing. It's also not valid to Far Rockaway since that branch like the Q113 bus travels via Nassau County.

What are you referring to? Riding between intermediate stops, or riding to/from New York City? Most commuter railroads charge by zones, and the minimum at NJT is $1.75 one way or $2.75 round trip. What is so "costly" about that? To go between Elizabeth and Rahway or Plainfield and Bound Brook for $2.75 round trip, that's a fair amount.

As far as traveling to/from New York City, I look at it this way: If you are going to New York to see a ball game, a concert, or go drinking, it's up to you to pay whatever it costs. Those aforementioned events are not mandatory. If you don't like the fares, stay home. Or buy a car and pay for gas, tolls, and parking and see if that's cheaper than the train fares. And if you are traveling to/from New York City to commute to a job, then you should be able to afford the commuting costs, or get a job closer to home.

Awsum pics from an awsum day. As always it was a pleasure hangin' out with the faithful for a day of riding, picture taking, & catching up on the lives of those who make these Informal Events. Ya know, spending the time riding to Ass Crack Wherever with you guys is something I look forward to, in addition to the trains.

Alright 2024, smile for Freddie G.............

Great pictures and a great day for a trip! I wish I could have been there. One of these years I'll get up to the New York area by myself and just ride around for a week or two.

A long time ago I lived in Schenectady for a couple of years, and drove to Brewster North a couple of times to take the train into the city. Never rode the diesels beyond there, though. I think there may have been too few of them back then for me to use easily.

Not too far from here there's a little college town called Due West, and there are bumper stickers that ask, "Due West of What?" Do they have something like that for Southeast, too? :-)
