Know Anything About MARC? |
|
Posted by Nilet on Mon Jun 2 22:47:17 2008 I shall have a chance to take one (1) ride on MARC during my vacation this summer. Is the Camden line any good for railfanning? It's the only one that leaps to mind for my singular MARC trip, given that I'm going to be coming into DC on the Capitol and departing on the NEC, thus riding over the two other MARC lines. If the Camden line isn't particularly good for railfanning, is there a particular stop on one of the other lines that's worth an extra trip to? People who have suggestions for railfanning WMATA are also encouraged to post them. I shall likely have time for a bit of that too. |

During rush hours there hhp8s go 125 mph (The fastest commuter rail in the coutry) And not to mention the amtrak trains. The other two MARC lines only has service during rush hours. Wheres the NEC runs the whole day. But mostly between DC and bultimore(But only a few trains go all the way to perryville) And MARC only uses the HPP8s during rush hour due to amtraks high electic bill it changes MARC. During the midday it uses the diesel sets from the camden and brunswick lines.but the camden line can be good for freight train action. As seen in this video..... And these videos also.... Thats just a few there are other videos RFing that line on youtube. Hope i helped... |

People who have suggestions for railfanning WMATA are also encouraged to post them. I shall likely have time for a bit of that too.The whole Metro system is a masterpiece but there are specific segments that I recommend: Orange Line from East Falls Church to Vienna/Fairfax-at this point the Orange line runs in the middle of the Interstate 66. It does about 50 or 60 and it breezes by the traffic on the highway. Red Line from Medical Center to Shady Grove-after Medical Center the Red Line goes over a viaduct and makes a sharp S curve over the Beltway. It goes in and out of tunnels before emerging and speeding in the back of several garages and car dealerships. It is much faster than the traffic on the adjacent Rockville Pike Blue Line to Largo Center. The Blue Line isn't my favorite line but Largo Town Center is my favorite station. It is a futuristic and sleek looking station with nice artwork. It is next to this shopping center. Yellow Line from L'Enfant Plaza to Pentagon. The Yellow Line goes over the Potomac River. It's a nice view. This is just a short list of the possible railfan trips on the nation's preeminent transit system. You will have fun riding the Metro. |

Posted by Red Line to Glenmont on Tue Jun 3 11:18:05 2008, in response to Re: Know Anything About MARC?, posted by Olog-hai on Mon Jun 2 23:29:24 2008. Back to discussing MARC: The Camden Line only runs during rush hours. Luckily it runs in both directions during rush hours so if you plan it right you can take one train to Baltimore and one train back.http://www.mtamaryland.com/services/marc/schedulesSystemMaps/CamdenN&S.pdf Or you can take it to downtown Baltimore, take the Light Rail to Baltimore's Penn Station (or the Mt. Royal Stop because the Penn Station-bound train only runs every 30 minutes), and then get the Amtrak train back to your northern destination. The Camden Line runs past the Green Line Greenbelt stop, then up along US 1 through Laurel, past quarries near Fort Meade, then near lots of polluted waterways leading into Baltimore, I believe, before ending at a little pisher of a station next to the Baseball park and the Light Rail Line. If the switch were thrown differently, it could wander under Howard St. in the famous Baltimore Tunnel and further on through the old Mt. Royal Station, which is now the Md. College of Art and Design and next to E. 26 St., but now only freight trains do that. The train decades ago used to end at the Camden St. Railroad Station building, which is now where the Orioles have their offices. Thirty-five years ago, I walked through that station as a station. |

Then the B&A Railroad became a bus-only company. Then it, along with the McMahon Bus Company that ran buses from the Towson, Timonium, Cockeysville area, all got bought out by the state and put into the MTA around 1972 or 1973. All the expresses down York Road and Charles St. have the McMahon Company as their ancestor. The #14 Bus along Ritchie Highway (and now the Light Rail) has B&A as its ancestor. Also, there is a town called Annapolis Junction in Maryland that is called that because that is where the main line had its split for a branch to Annapolis, but it is 20 miles from the State Capital. |

That's when it stopped going to Penn Station (1926 IINM). Until 1958, it went to CRRNJ Terminal in Jersey City. A lot of the B&O long-distance trains went through Camden Station as well (National Limited, Capitol Limited etc). |

Some of the MARC cab cars have a good railfan view where the inside door doesn't even have any blue tinting. You can review the pictures I took here: http://acm.jhu.edu/~sthurmovik/Railpics/04-06-24_CAMDEN_LINE_WAMATA_TRIP/Thumbnails.html There's lots of stuff to railfan around Camden Yards and I would probably be able to join you. |

I'm expecting giant stinging insects to come flying out of those holes any second . . .Older MARC train. From 2001. The E-unit has been eviscerated and acts like Amtrak's F40PHM "Cabbages". |

OK... from the suggestions of you and others in this thread, I think the best option would be to take the Camden line out and the Penn back. (Or the other way around.) |

I like Gallery Pl/Chinatown for the overpass! The overpass use to be a fare collection mezzanine before the fare collection area was moved to its present location under the southwest corner of the Verizon Center. The station managers kiosk was directly under the point where the two station train hall arch vaults cross. Prior to the construction of the Verizon Center the surface entrance was on the southeast corner of 7th and G Streets. The original entrance was built with no escalators on the assumption that the property would be developed in the future. Before the completion of the construction of the Green Yellow line (E, F Route) part of the station, passengers descended off the side of the overpass to the Red line platforms using temporary stairs. The temporary stair to the Shady Grove platform use to be to the right of the pylon in the foreground The temporary stair to the Glenmont platform use to be to the left of the of the middle pylon.
