I've been lucky in the M7a's on the Hudson line, like impressively clean. The NH M-2/4/6 is, well you know, dismal on a good day and worse on a bad one.

The Comets are all grandfathered and all comply with crash standards of date of delivery.
The Cab car to trailer modification may be an agreement with union but its not FRA.

And then, there were massive ridership increases and only the low-plat ones got retired. Of course, now, there are 117 MLVs for service increases (155 C1s and C3s replaced by 279 MLVs - 8 for ACES).

But the LIRR M1s were built in the 70s!!!!!!!!!! And STILL, they met the 800,000 pound requirement, and EVEN went to 1.2 million pounds before something buckled, as you said. No grandaddy needed there for crashworthiness. How do you know the older commets didn't meet the crash specifications as well? What about the Arrow III cars? Do you know if they met the standards of one million pounds? They were built by BUDD in the 70s as well, so they too probably meet the standards of crashworthiness. Maybe the older ST. Louis cars weren't built as well, but the BUDD Arrows are GOOD.

The new C5s would probably fare worse than the BUDDs, they always creak. In an accident, they might fold up or something. :( They have to be strengthened rigidified by the shops.

What do they do with the feces once they are dumped? Do they hold it in the bathroom stall or something? If they dump the feces to the tracks, then the bathroom should smell like it did originally once the air circulates. *UNLESS* the passengers have aiming issues, and even with the explosive warheads, like the army. Need laser guidance?

The retention toilets get dumped just about every 30 hours , the sweet smell is actually the toilet tablets put in the water to hide the smell.
On M-7's and Bombardier centerdoors the toilets are different and empty to a waste tank under car.

At date of delivery, yes. But do the Comet III cab cars comply with the same standards as the newer Comet V's? I was under the impression they were increased in the mid 90's by the FRA.

Of course, I could be completely wrong. You'd know better.

There is no standard of one million pound, the standard has been 800 000 for last 20 years or more.
Only higher standard is for tier II or high speed trainsets.
Again if you don't know the specifications don't spout off you look dumber than shit.

The FRA standards are for NEW equipment only, or if equipment is structurally rebuilt.
Even an old RDC still complies, unless you start changing and altering the carbody.

That's not what I am stating. I know the current FRA standards are for the new equipment. I know the Comet III's don't HAVE to comply with the newer standards. I just wanted to know if the standards back when the C3 cabs were built were not as stringent as they are for the newer equipment (C4-C5 and MVL's).

But i was wondering how the BUDD arrows performed in buffloading. What about the am-cans? What is the Acela's MAX Buff load, i asuume it is considered high speed?
What are the Tier II specs?
I know Tier one is 800 000 pounds-NOW.

AHA! there you go, i *KNEW* they had some sort of brake issues. I haven't encountered any door issues yet, just annoying that the cabs don't have the stepwell area, and for WHAT?. You could increase safety other ways, not just by getting rid of a door and step well, need a good collision post there, and stronger endframe.

"EPIC" brake systems, where did you hear of that?

MNCR is still using Comet II cab cars and they come back from rebuilt good for another 18 year or so, so whatever NJT wants to do is fine , MNCR is more confident in their signal system it appears.
There is other ways to avoid collisions, than making trains into tanks.

Do you think that the fatal collision at Harmon Cove is what caused NJT concern? Best way to stop that crash indeed would have been the stop signal were enforced.

I'd bet it's why the Comet II cabs were rebuilt as trailers only a few years later. IIRC, it was a Comet II cab which was involved in that wreck.

They will be, however.

NJT Press Release 2329: The additional multilevel vehicles will approximately replace the seating capacity of 49 Comet III-series rail cars delivered to NJ TRANSIT in 1990. The Comet III cars require a midlife overhaul, and replacement of these cars with multilevel vehicles has been determined to be a cost-effective alternative.

Then there are 106 C1 cars in NJT's possession, not counting any C1 low platforms which have not yet been removed from NJT property and were replaced by the Comet Vs (32 C1 cabs, 45 C1 trailers, 15 C1B cabs, and 15 C1B trailers.)

The best chance...and this may be a crapshoot...would be trains through Mount Arlington Park-Ride and Lake Hopatcong, which are almost exclusively Comet Is with a few Comet V sets here and there.

That doesn't mean the C3's will be retired and replaced by multilevels, it only means the money intended for their overhauls will be used to buy new cars. I'd imagine the C3's will be retained until they begin falling apart, which at 18 they won't.

If they truly don't want them, the MTA should purchase them.

No The NJT train was comming up on a stop signal and at a speed below 15 mph went trough the red signal , no cab signal system would have helped as both the NJT and MNCR systems do not have positive stop function only a function to get speed below set levels.
The train was coasting at 13 mph but engineer fell asleep or may have has a diabetic problem.

It should be noted that many of the ex-NJT C1 low plats were sold rather than scrapped, with Frontrunner getting the lion's share (after Georgia DOT was prevented from buying them).

By retiring, it's entirely possible that they will end up with someone else secondhand---such as SEPTA, MARC, or Metro-North.

Yeah, i saw the report, and a loco to railcar collision will usually always have the railcar have major damages, especially the off-center collision that occured there. Now only if the locomotive shoved the railcar to the side without shearing the side off somehow.

DAMN!! How fast was the loco going though? Must have been doing 30, which is trackspeed in that area to shear the railcar like that. Just 13 miles wouldn't be fast enough to cause that damage. Now, 13 miles and 30 miles...YEAH, that *is* gonna cause damage.

Weird thing is the engineer on cab car survived the one on the GP type passenger locomotive did not.

The thing is, the engineer in a cab car can go to the other side, where there is practically no damage. Shame the engineer of the loco died to, that usually only happens in a loco-loco collision, but this was a strange accident, and parts of the steel of the cab car were logged into the cab of the loco, particularly a beam at the cieleing level. There wasn't much intrusion into the loco cab either, just one big rod from the cab car, which really messed up the inside of the cab, and that is probably what killed the engineer. Kind of a freak accident, and no safety regulation probably would have made it better. *MAYBE* the passenger wouldn't die if the side had better reenforcement, but the front is the front, and all that force was concentrated directly on the engineer positions.
