Yeah, I heard about that.

Pity that the only 186-mph rail line on the island that gave birth to railroads is the CTRL, though.

Here is a map of proposed high-speed rail lines in the country (as of 2001):

(From Wikipedia)

There are certainly lots of possibilities, especially in the Midwest.

Note when I say high-speed rail, I mean rail with track speeds of 125 mph. I seriously doubt anywhere on this line will ever see speeds higher than that (it's simply too expensive to upgrade the ROW to higher speeds).

Under any administration, these will be long term goals. As mentioned the next president will have more pressing matters to attend to than rail, like ending our involvement in Iraq, and fixing our health care and education systems.

FRA's a joke. They require going three track classes higher than Class 4, plus cab signals and some form of automatic train stop/control, to allow passenger trains to go 2 percent faster than 79 mph.

Whoops; typo. 58 percent faster. And this is in spite of the technology having been in place for well over fifty years.

It's hard to say how to connect NEC with midwest. You've got the Allegheney Mountains to contend with, and the money that would be needed to build true HSR through there could be much better spent of helping to develop other systems. I say get the easier parts done first.

Well, tilting trains would make some impact on existing alignments (supposing that the necessary trackage upgrades/reinstatements were included). Okay, that horseshoe curve would still be slow, but there is something to be gained from running tilting trains both east from Pittsburgh (reasonably direct routes to New York, Philly, Baltimore, and DC) and west from Pittsburgh (say, Youngstown - Cleveland - Toledo - Detroit/Chicago; Akron - Columbus - Cincinnati/Indianapolis (tempting then to go - St Louis - KCMO)).

Perhaps one thing that should be done if Obama is serious would be to cut from money going to Iraq (and force Iraq to do more for itself), and diverting that money to fixing the broken transportation network stateside.

Saying that transit in the US isn't broken is denying the problem that exists.

Abandonned trackage is better. It gives a new ROW for dedicated HSR. A lot of these old ROWs in the midwest are arrow straight

Yes, and part of the Allentown Terminal Railroad ROW has American Parkway sitting on it. However, IINM, the location for the old LVRR Allentown station may still be available.

Never heard of FM rest & relaxation radio.

If enough people push hard enough, you could get passenger service back. NJT still has a long-term plan to re-extend the RVL to Phillipsburg; that could be extended into the Lehigh Valley, but barring a miracle, the LVRR main line would need to be used.

You're speaking unrealistically. There is no such country as Iraq if we start cutting money and especially troops; Iran will move right in (they're already there, in fact).

Obama ain't serious about anything except getting elected. After that, it's just a shell game.

Who is denying a problem with US transit does't exist. I am saying though that Obama just "saying there is a problem" does NOTHING. Where is he getting the money from? And how is HE going to solve the problem? It's just like all of his other speeches...

"The US needs better transit" (applause follows)

ANyone could rattle off everything that needs attention. That says NOTHING.

'I'm for better schools'

Well, who the hell isn't?

'I'm for less crime?'

No, really? I thought you were campaigning for the mugger and rapist endorsement?

'I'm for cleaner air'

Well, everyone SAYS they're for cleaner air....

That said, it's at least encouraging to see some attention paid it, which might be repaid, however slightly, in a budget down the line. But beyond that, it's mostly wishful thinking.

The original LVRR trains ran from Bethlehem to NYC in less than 3 hours with stops. The bus service today is only marginally better. The Bethlehem Terminal (LVRR - Reading RR) is now a part of the hospital I work for. They restored the building beautifully. It is a community health/dental clinic.

Well, I think that one can hope that if someone repeats a certain idea, it will receive more attention and probably relatively more funding in budgets. That's the real upshot of anyone who mentions expansion of rail service.

But without more, I think that pegging further hopes to something like this is awfully premature.

I agree with you, but not 100%, Obama *IS* a politician, and is looking for his gain, and is saying stuff to get votes, BUT, some presidents are better than others, like Theodore Rosevelt, and Franklin Roosevelt, who were both excellent. The Gerhard Dahls of presidency, but i don't know about Obama, he SEEMS like he will be the most commited than the other two. McCain is commited to Bush, so i really don't think we need to keep running this experiment. Clinton is saying some bull about 30 day pullout, and gas prices. She pulls out in thirty days, the world will probably be in worse shape with all the power struggles there. Sadly, but truly, we need to set up a puppet dictator or something like we did in pakistan before pulling out. Even Hamid Karzai is a puppet, and admitted to it. Now i don't want to start about Hussein, but in reality, i don't think he gave TOW CHITS about America, and didn't want to bomb us or anything unless we tryed to play patty cake with him, all he cared about was his middle east, and that made him content.
