It's a shame that you reduce everything to numbers...

It's my scientific/engineering training. Something does not exist, unless it can be measured.

Subjectively, everybody believes that his line is the most crowded, has the least service, etc. The TA would be better served, if it had impartial metrics for most of its aspects, published them and followed them. I'm not talking about self-serving metrics like on-time performance that get loosened to get 95% ratings.

there are other factors involved in such a decision.

As they say in the consulting business, "if the customer wants peanuts, shovel him peanuts." If effective, open, impartial metrics are in place, then the cost of these "other factors" can also be evaluated.

Too bad they dont have enough people down here(who make these decisions) who think that way huh?

Still you cant beat this system though it has its faults but 24 hr a day service is a godsend..

All i have to say and i will keep saying look at other transit systems in other cites...

I have seen quite a few of them and none of em even come close to NYC..

That's the type of unsupported, qualitative assessment of which I'm suspicious. What specific areas and by how much?

San Diego, Washington DC, Houston, Dallas, Miami Ft Lauderdale, Denver, San Fransico.

Rode the rail lines and the Bus Lines (trolleys in Denver and San Deigo and San Fransico).

I did a lot of things at night as well and after 0200 hrs in those Places the service is either not there or at least an hr wait.

Another thing sorry if you havent been to some of these places to see it for yourself..

I stand by everything i post here, if i say i was somewhere then i was.

If you dont believe me too bad im sorry, i wont lose sleep over it.

So, I gather your quantitative assessment is midnight hours service levels.

The TA's midnight hours service is impressive, compared to other systems. It may be a NYC thing because PATH is also 24/7.

I remember a conversation I had with the curator of the Musee des Transports Urbains some 40 years ago. He wondered how preventive maintenance could be performed on a system that operated 24/7. (At that time the answer was that the TA did not do any preventive maintenance).

However, cost-benefit analysis is still in vogue. How many people benefit? According to the hourly tables of the 2005 Hub Bound Report, it represents slightly less than 2% of the entire passenger count.

This 2% might be more important than the raw numbers indicate. If a substantial percentage of this 2% provided essential services for the remaining 98%, then such service is warranted.

Like Stephen said, service after midnight is just one of many ways you could compare systems.

I don't think you can do an overall comparison, as it would be subjective. But you can compare systems based on hundreds of objective measures, and even assign weights to those measures, thus coming up with a weighted score for each system. You could then compare those weighted scores. But the work behind such a comparison, in order to do it right, would be astronomical.
