Around that time there was a passenger that fell between cars at Brooklyn Bridge. THen there was the 5 year old that fell north of Dekalb on R40 equipment.
Here is another:
AND ANOTHER
On Halloween of 2006, one more crossing death
Here is a paid professional conductor who says it is unsafe to even walk between the cars
This was on the advice of our in house resident who demands googling everything, which was about 5 minutes worth so there is NO misinformation on the question of safety these days. Oh here is one on the 1 train last year but it is perfectly safe

the brooklyn bridge incident involved someone riding between cars IIRC
the (1) incident says notihng about whether he was doing anything wrong between cars, as homeless people often do

so you showed nothing.

WHy? Because he added boldface to one word? He still didn't look through all the links or prove it is safe to do so, just using statistics from 100 years. There are two authority figures stating it is unsafe, both of which are employed by NYCT. Shame he has the gall to state a conductor's opinion isn't worth shit to make his arguments. All it takes is a person with a dizzy spell or loss of balance to ruin it for anyone else who thinks it is unsafe. I have seen enough falls between cars working as a conductor, motorman and engineer for over 20 years to know NYCT is better off with that rule

And like anything else police officers "have to pay the rent".
They are expected to produce a certain number of tickets a month and going on sweeps gets the revenue, they check those with no ID for warrants and in general it keeps crime down in the subways.
Its the the broken window theory.
As a teen growing up in NYC we rode between cars to drink beer, smoke ciggarrettes and other things. Luckily the police never caught me.

"Well lets see, Boston does 65mph on level track"

I've ridden all the lines in Boston. The Orange Line never got past 40 mph and usually did less, the Blue Line certainly did not do anything close to 65 outbound to the airport, though I concede I didn't ride it beyond the airport, so I can't comment about its catenary territory. The Red Line doesn't do 65 across the Charles River Bridge, nor does it do 65 anywhere north of the Charles River. The only place it might do 65 is south of Boston downtown, maybe.

As to Philadelphia, the Market-Frankford Line doesn't do 70 anywhere, including the level track in the tunnel where it bypasses 19th and 22nd St stations. The Broad Street local doesn't do anywhere near 70 mph, but the express is pretty respectable at 55-65 but not consistently.

So other than being full of shit, what was your point?

I'm sorry? The BSS most definitely does more than 70mph. I've witnessed 77mph on a commute to North Philly and have been on trips with other subchatters that topped 70mph.

The only place it might do 65 is south of Boston downtown, maybe.

Maybe. If it actually does it. If it does, that's a third of one line out of four subway lines in Boston doing anything close to what you describe.

This is yet another reason the trains get slowed down. At a major station, with only one "main" staircase, EVERYBODY "needs" to be in "that" car which opens up right next to that staircase.

After I've already closed the rear of the train with no issues at all, I look to the front, and people are STILL slowly filing off. Waiting. Waiting. Waiting.

Meanwhile, there's two dozen or so people on the platform waiting to get ON the train, and it's too much for them to walk to the next car, which has NOBODY getting off. No, they have to wait until that first car is devoid of people exiting, and then take their time boarding there.

I still think that's an unreasonable rule, if not a dangerous one.

What if I enter a car and several rowdy, noisy, hoodie-wearing teens enter after me? What if I enter a car only to discover that a hygiene- and residence-challenged person is already there and is emitting a pungent odor of human waste that is usually found in toilets?

And what if the train is held up between stations due to "congestion?" Are you saying that I'm a scofflaw if I change cars to avoid getting mugged, attacked or nauseated?
