NYC Transit spokeswoman Deirdre Parker said the per-worker cost was approximately $738, and the total cost $2,583,245.

I have no problem with issuing new uniforms to the employees - but $738 for a friggin uniform ?!?!?!?! Who manufactured them - the same company that designs $900 toilet seats for the air force?

Thsat was the Air Force's fault, for insisting that a defense contractor manufacture the toilets. The contractor had advised the Air Force to go to Home Depot, but nobody listened.

Better than asking the employees to foot the bill.

When you join NYPD, you have to buy specific regulation pants, shirt, socks, shoes, jacket, etc. at your expense. Sure, the department might give you an allowance, but from what I hear, it doesn't cover everything.

Some years ago NYPD changed from a powder-blue shirt (that Philly cops still wear) to dark blue. Back to the store you go...

You misunderstood. $738 per employee for his/her uniform supply. For $738, an employee might get (5)pairs or pants, (10)shirts, (1)tie, (3)hats, etc....

I love the worker who "declined to give his name". Daily News is always good at establishing one thing-TA workers live in constant fear.

TA workers should have a dress code, not uniform. Acceptable pants would be plain blue jeans or work pants(Dickies), solid colored shirts, and shoes. No logo baseball caps. The T/O shirts are horrible. They're the same ones Time Warner repairmen wear.

When BSM began public operation in 1970 our uniforms (copied from a 1936 BTC pattern) were $72.00 each (3-piece). In 1996, the last year the uniform company made custom uniforms to measurements, the cost was $315.00. A local tailor made one recently for a member, the cost was in the $500.00+ range.

That was in Baltimore, I suspect uniform costs in New York are higher.

LOL!

KC bus drivers look pretty good in their uniforms. They work hard and are courteous and helpful. Of course it's easy to overlook that aspect when you have to wait an hour at the bus stop for the courteous and helpful driver to show up.

Don't forget the shoes, however...that will get you. A typical uniform would consist of a long sleeve shirt, a short sleeve shirt (or a turtle neck sweater for certain employees), a sweater, a vest, a jacket, slacks, shorts (for certain titles such as bus operator), socks, and shoes. $738 for all doesn't sound TOO bad.

Also, I wonder how much of this was because of employees assimilated into MTA Bus.

BTW, does the MTA do uniform deductions, or is it all on the MTA itself?

In Monterrey, Mexico, motormen and bus drivers where whatever they want to wear.

The bus drivers hang a big rear view mirror and decorate it with family pictures or their girlfriends name painted in big letters. They also listen to the radio while driving. None of this is an issue.

There is no labor relations.

Good point. Maybe the writer didn't even know. He just ate what TA put on his plate.

So let's do the math.

$2,500,00/$738 equals 3,387 employees. TA has far more than 3,387 uniformed employees. There are about 3,300 motormen alone. So it looks like they spend far more than $2.5 system-wide.

At NJT Rail, we are issued a new uniform every year. That comprises of 1 blazer, 2 pair of pants (choice of winter or summer), 2 long sleve shirts and 2 short sleeve shirts, 2 ties (choice of clip-on or regular), 1 hat (choice of mesh top or regular), and 1 swetaer (choice of cardigan or pull-over). When we are first hired, we are issued 1 light overcoat and 1 heavier gore-tex overcoat. The only way we can get replacements for either is if we forego some of the items listed above. For example, if I want a gore-tex coat in 2008, I would have to give up the blazer. Or if I still wanted the blazer, I would have to give up the pants and shirts. It works out like that. Or, if I wanted everything without giving up anything, I would have to pay half (NJT pays the other half) for the overcoat.

Here at Metro-North, it's a similar deal, but we get 4 pants, summer or winter weight, 6 shirts of our choice (short or long sleeve), one MNR logo uniform sweater every 2 years, jacket about every 2 yrs, heavy uniform colored heavy overcoat with reflective arm sleeve strips, ties (standard or clip-on), hat (summer mesh top or winter full top). Replacements are paid for (sadly), but exchanges are no charge, and pants, shirts, jackets are fitted to the person. Also you get issued title badges (Ass't Conductor or Conductor, the latter issued to you upon full Conductor qualification), MNR lapel pins, MNR tieclips and MNR belt buckle. We also get a $100 yearly shoe allowance. This is to adhere to Metro-North's requirement for 6-inch high ankle-protective boots. No low-top shoes are allowed anymore.

Yeah, the new TSS and CSA uniforms are very similar. Especially with the ties and all.

Now when I see a "uniformed" employee standing on the platform, I don't know who it is....

NYCT TSS' have uniforms too, a recent event. They look like a bunch of Maytag repairmen.

The clerk looks like a certain union activist. I'm not going to give his name, but my co-workers may recognise the initials: M.G.
