LinkI wonder why they're short-turning at Queens Plaza. Doing so would allow more trips, though, so that should maximize the classic train fun; although I wonder even if on Sunday timetables, there will be time for the switching operation. |

I had figured that something like a northern terminal of 145th or 168th Sts would be used, with the vintage train going to World Trade Center. But for some reason, they will be sending the train to Queens. Or that if they send the train to Queens, the vintage train would between Astoria and Whitehall St, as does the W route. |

The Second Ave Sagas said: "Among the cars included will be Car No. 100, an R1-type car that was the first of 300 placed in service when the IND opened 75 years ago; Car No. 484, an R4 car that was outfitted with a then-experimental public address system; and Car No. 1575, an original R7 that, after a wreck, served as the prototype to the R10." My guess is that there will be the usual 6 cars. |

I just reworded the subject heading to make it easier for a non railfan to latch on to the thread. This post is still part of the original thread. Does anyone know if they'll be starting from Queens Plaza or from 2nd Avenue? I'm hoping that the first trip will come out of 2nd Avenue. |

'Deluge' might be too strong a word. When this same GO ran a few weekends ago, service on both legs of the D was considerably less frequent than usual.Probably one inner track at 2nd Avenue for D layups and the other for V layups. This is one time when the 'overbuilt IND' is advantageous. Of course, that means the vintage train can't take lengthy breaks between runs as it did back in September '04. The crew might have to take lunch at Queens Plaza instead of 2nd Avenue. Is that extra layup track just to the north of QP- the one on which 1979-2001 weekend/late night Gs were laid up- still there? Or was it removed in the wake up the 63rd Street connection? |

These cars are usually stored at 207 or CIY, so it seems likely 2nd Avenue would be the starting point. Somehow it seems doubtful they would be stored at Jamaica, which is predoimately outdoors. |

There's probably too much traffic along the 8th Avenue/CPW corridor, whereas there's only one service through 53rd Tube on the weekends. The 5th/53rd Tower, normally dormant on weekends, will have to be open to accomodate the vintage train's movements between 6th and 53rd. |

The implication made in my previous statement is that based upon past history of the vintage cars being stored at 207 or CIY, the set would more likely start at 2nd Avenue than Queens Plaza. Of course, I could be wrong. Wouldn't be the first time.:-} |

Great combo, indeed: vintage trains and R40s on the rerouted Bronx/CPW D! Since at least one Slant ran on the upper D for this GO three weekends ago, it seems reasonable it would happen again.Unfortunately, our time to railfan is limited this particular Sunday. It's nice to know the R1/9s will be around for the four weekends after that. But will the split D GO be in effect for additional weekends beyond this one? Since you seem to be our expert ;-) on weekend GOs, I thought maybe you would know in advance. |

While the relative briefness of the route is disappointing, it will at least improve the odds of catching the train itself. I experienced great difficulty and long waits for the 168-WTC and Continental-2nd Avenue special back in '04. The GC-Utica SMEE run that December was a tremendous exercise in frustration. |

Well, when the R-1/9's were in service on the "F" line between Forest Hills and 2nd Avenue (via 63rd Street Line) in 2004, they started from the southern terminal point after they came down from 207th Street Yard. My guess that the train in use for these upcoming Sundays in December will start again on 2nd Avenue, probably discharge passengers at Queens Plaza to then relay on track D5 north of the station, and reverse back from there going southbound to 2nd Avenue.-William A. Probably not...#1300 was sent to the Transit Museum recently as a placeholder on display, while #100-484-1575 will be sent to active duty on those December Sundays on the IND 6th Avenue line.
