An R-160 announcement thread (with sounds)

I couldn't think of a decent subject for this post. Please excuse me, as it's been a long week, and I'm exhausted.

I *still* haven't worked with an R-143 or R-160 in passenger service yet. But I had a chance recently to spend a little bit of time with an R-160 layup, so I did some announcement digging.

The R-160A-1 set was 8349-8352:8332-8329. It contained the new announcements for the (B)(D) and (W), as previously reported by fellow hardworking Brothers Railman and North-Easten.

Some notes, in no particular order:

-The northbound (Q) makes the following announcement in Manhattan:

"This is a 57 Street-bound (Q) express train. The next and last stop is Midtown - 57 Street/Seventh Avenue".

The northbound (Q) in 2014 will make the following, long-winded announcement:

"This is a 96 Street - Second Avenue-bound (Q) train, via the Second Avenue Line. The next and last stop is 96 Street."

Proff (turn your volume up if necessary):

(Q) to East Side - 96 Street.

The (B) train in Manhattan doesn't mention being express, as I assumed. Example:

"This is a Brooklyn-bound (B) train."

However, in Brooklyn:

"This is a Brighton Beach-bound (B) express train."

Also, while the (B) line program has the stops listed on the FIND, there are currently no transfers listed.

The (D) in the Bronx:

"This is a Norwood - 205 Street-bound (D) train. The next stop is 174 and 175 Streets." (Yes, she says 174 "and" 175.)

The (J) train announces its last two Queens stops as "Sutphin Boulevard - JFK Airport" (a name I can't stand), and "Jamaica Center - Parsons/Archer".

A (D) train operating on the Sea Beach Line has signs that display:

D| via SEA BEACH
D| 6 AV EXP
D| NORWOOD-205 ST

But the announcements say:

"This is a Manhattan-bound (D) train via the (N) line. The next stop is Gravesend - 86 Street."

We've already heard the (A) line announcements from the intial testing period way back when. But I still don't like them.

Southbound, in Manhattan:

"This is a Queens-bound (A) express train."

Southbound, in Brooklyn AND Queens:

"This is a Far Rockaway - Mott Avenue-bound (A) express train."

It may just be a glitch or a programming error, but it hasn't changed since the original test. But we don't have to worry about hearing this, as the R-160 WON'T be coming to the (A) anyway.

In an interesting move, the (L) and (M) lines feature re-recorded destination announcements by the standard R-160 voice, but keep the original-recorded station names by the original (L) lady from the R-143. Some examples, old and new:

(L) to Canarsie - Rockaway Parkway:

R-143:
"This is a Canarsie-bound (L) train."

R-160:
"This is a Rockaway Parkway-bound (L) train."

(M) Myrtle Shuttle to Middle Village - Metropolitan Avenue:

R-143:
"This is a Middle Village - Metropolitan Avenue-bound (M) train."

R-160:
"This is a Queens-bound (M) train."
and once in Queens...
"This is a Metropolitan Avenue-bound (M) train."

And just to wrap things up, here's a (W) bit:

W| ASTORIA LCL
W| BROADWAY LCL
W| WHITEHALL ST

And (W) sound proff:

(W) to Lower Manhattan - Whitehall Street/South Ferry.

It seems that all of the lines released so far ((B)(D)(J)(N)(Q)(W)(Z)) are voiced by the same lady as the (N), except for the original announcements from the (L) and (M), and the (A), which is voiced by Dianne Thompson of (2) line fame.

Thanks for posting this. I can't wait to hear these in service if the R160's end up the (B), (D) and (W)

According to this list, all the names will be long winded. Unless they decide to switch "Seaport" to "Fulton Street-South Street Seaport".
