Last Sunday, Sept. 30, as promised, my Fall charter using two 2400 series CTA cars, 2533-2534, covered 121 miles in just under 8 hours operating on all eight of the CTA crayon color lines, Green, Pink, Blue, Purple, Yellow, Brown, Orange, and Red. There were 12 changes of direction including four at terminals and 8 mid-line changes: five in middle tracks, two at route selector interlockings, and one remote controlled interlocking. The charter operated through Tower 18 four times in four different directions: NB Green line, EB Pink line to outside Loop, NB Brown line, SB Brown line.

These photos chronicle the reverse move at Clark tower using the remote Barry AV interlocking. Our charter operating as a SB Purple line and encounters a red over red home signal as a NB Brown lline train moves through the junction.

After crossing the branch leads, a red over yellow tells us that the tower operator has routed us from track 1 to track 2. Years from now we could continue this move, crossing over to Track 3, but now Track 3 is nonexistant...removed for construction of the new tracks and platforms at Belmont station.

South of the Belmont platforms is the remote Barry interlocking. We will proceed through to the "Clear 2 car" signs beyond. The signs are posted because this is a common move made whenever cars move from Kimball yard to Howard ST yard/ Skokie Shops.

Now reversed and running as a NB Brown line train and first we go through the new platform on the new track laid directly on the concrete subroadbed. North of the platforms the home signal indicates red over yellow, we're routed from Track 4 to Track 3, then from Track 3 onto the Brown line branch lead. A SB Brown line train passes to the left. In Chicago, all CTA routes are designated northbound or southbound except the Pink line.

The charter made several other "Rare mileage-non revenue moves" included the turning loop at Forest Pk terminal on the Blue line, EB Pink line to outer loop at Tower 18, Outer loop to south side main at Tower 12, Morgan Middle track twice, route selector reverse moves at Harrison JCT Pink/Blue lines , 14th Middle track twice, 63rd middle track, stub track 63rd middle. The charter also operated on the Yellow line on a Sunday, when the line is normally closed. See ya next year.

Thanks, You can bet I slept-in late on Monday. Pencil in the last weekend in April, 2008 for a rerun of this railfan charter.

Wonderful pics and narration. Shame the CTA had to go and ruin that interlocking over the last few years.

Thanks TS. There were three other charters out on Sunday and the Red line in both directions was rerouted over the Loop "L". Still we finished two minutes hot.

Movie charter, they're filming ER and a Hollywood action...I don't know which one they were doing on Sunday. The other charters were one for the History Museum and one serving the Niki Exhibit in Garfield Park.

The single best party I ever attended was on a CTA charter. It was in March-ish of 1997 (maybe 1998), the Saturday before Palm Sunday. The ride began at Linden Station as the group which 'bought' the party was all from St. Francis Xavier Church in Wilmette.

There was food and wine, music, special guests along the way, and a proper number of comfort stops. The ride only went down to the Loop, which it circled a few times, and then ended up at the end of the Brown Line. When we pulled away from the terminal after a rest stop and smoke break, the lights were turned off in the 2 car train (In a picture somewhere I have the car number, which was, I believe in the low 3000s.) and the DJ played the song from Risky Business, "LOve on a Real Train". (and this was at a church party!!!)

The CTA did a terrific job outfitting the car, with tables, countertops, etc. for the food and beverages. The next morning the crowd at 8am Mass was REALLY hurting...The trip went for $5500 at a live auction, so for 30 couples the price of $180 per was a real bargain. Catering was by Carlyn Berghoff, daughter of the family owning the famous eponymous restaurant oint he Loop.

Thanks to Fred and to Easy.

I'm surprised it hasn't been noted how frugal CTA interlocking signalling is. "All Stop", "Proceed on Main", "Proceed on Diverging" are given using only three lights. Position is as important as color. The bottom light below the signal plaque is yellow and only illuminates in the "Call On" indication.

Our cab signal system is active throughout any interlockings, giving allowable speed indications and rear end protection. Most Chicago "L" lines do not have wayside block signals. On the Blue line, the waysides are being removed on the Forest Park branch (Congress line). So far cab signalling is cut in from the terminal at Forest Park east to Western AV.

Off-topic aside: she's now the owner of the restaurant, which she has changed considerably.

The ability to go there and have a fish sandwich or a knockwurst (Thueringer) sandwich and one of their dark beers was a true treasure in the Loop.

OKAYYYY... Never would have thought of that one, good call Jersey Mike. Yes, those pneumatic machines had a sound and rhythm all their own..sort of a "sching SHINK...shhhhhhhhhh." One of the main compressors in the State ST subway was at Roosevelt RD station and the backup in the Armitage AV tower. A pipe ran the length of the subway. I remember a signal maintainer remarking that if the compressor at Armitage kicked in, it meant a telephone call would soon follow. All that was ripped out a few years ago when the signalling in the subway was modernized and converted from wayside to cab signal.

Here's one of those track trips that Jersey doesn't like. It's protecting Track 1 reverse moves into the Belmont station.
