I think they should just leave the bullet as the (7) on that 11-car train and not use the diamond 7 anymore.

Why was all this necessary?? Someone prolly sent in a customer report card thingie saying they weren't told if their train is LCL or EXP.... prolly cuz they wear an IPod and don't listen when on-board teh 7.

The front displays seem to be okay, but the side ones tend to be a bit harder to read as some of the "off" LEDs are partially illuminated by the "on" ones. Not good.

And if the car is needed on another line? (This assumes that you want to do away with the rollsign and put in a plastic board #7. These cars have been needed on the #4 from time to time to make score.)

This is called the MTA taking the cheap way out. The smart way would be to go with a full LED with local or express.

Well at least this way they won't need to swap out the R142A's for the R62A's just so that riders can see which 7 is local or express as well as buying additional B-cars to make 11-car sets. Not to mention the waste of time and energy to swap 2 entire fleets via B division.
If anything, the R62A's should die on the 7 then the MTA should buy 60' long cars that is an IRT version of the R160's. The 7 is isolated from the ML and it should stay isolated.

Keep the rollsign and rather than use the diamond, just use only the circle and light up the lcl or exp sign. Simple as that.

Exactly. You can see a half mile away by virtue of the diamond what the train is. You can see the word express before the train hits the platform and see a red blur until the train passes your point not taking into consideration back lighting situations. A waste of manpower, money and resources. My guess is they want to eliminate platform conductors at Willets and Main St, if they haven't already done so and this is their brilliant idea to do so by eliminating the cranking

You know what?

The more i "look" at these posts the more i can see it happening..

I know one of the Platform C/R's at Main Street he says he may be retiring this year..

They have 2 "regular" Platfrom Jobs at Main St One AM and One PM, the Ones at Main St work Willets Point as well.

As well as Two at Times Square One AM and One PM..

Once hes gone there goes ONE platfrom job..

A full LED does save money, however. The initial cost of an LED is more, but for these cars, you can probably run it through the rest of the life without replacement.

This very thing was discussed in the chat last night...where Europeans hate LEDs for the front...something not seen in the northeastern US since 1990 for any agency not named the CDTA---demanding rollsigns for new equipment.

Or keep the diamond just for the front and leave all others on circle.

Although, I would hate to see the side-signs replaced with Franklin Shuttle-style plastic boards since those R62 rollsigns are the coolest!

What else is new; they probably got the cheapest 2 cent LEDs avalible. They should have gotten duel-colored LEDs, green for local, red for express. That would have really made telling them apart easy.

No there will be a need for the side-signs for specific destinations like Willets Pt or Main St.-Flushing. Just leave the bullet on the circle 7 and no local or express designation below it.
And nope, just have the front of every train just use the circle and have the lights on the front display lcl or exp since the train can be changed from local to express at QBP depending on the situation. Also it is easier to flip a switch rather than to manually crank the sign back to circle from diamond or vice versa.

What about when the 7 local terminates at 111 St or kicks everyone off at Willets Point without prior warning; there should be an LED sign for that to.

Also the front sign should have the back light shut of since it makes the LED less noticable. I can barely see it with the word "Express" lit up in the second picture. But if they like to change the trains from express from local at QBP at the last minute, noone will be satisfied....

I thought the problem was just being too wide? Damn, I still say a 10-car 600' train is what the 7 needs either that or make the 7 12-car trains and extend all the platforms.

Even the LOC, EXP are fine. It wouldn't be too hard to make them a little bit larger. There is more than enough space above the bullet.

The 7 will get R142 type cars in 11 car consists. That has been on the books for years.

:sigh: I was hoping if these experimental signs worked then there wouldn't be a need to swap out entire fleets [6's for the 7's]. Otoh I wonder if they would link those R62A singles into 5-car units?

The reason for the R142/As to go to the 7 has nothing to do with signage.
R62As cant use CBTC. R142s can be made to(more easily... R62s COULD, it just would be harder.)

From the looks of those photos, it might help to have the additional diamond front bullet if possible. But assuming they take your idea, will that mean a new map will have to be issued eliminating the 7 diamond? And if that happens will the 6 also cease use of the diamond express since it would then be on its own?

The 6 has digital signs so at the flip of the switch it can be the circle or diamond. For the 7 the sign/bullet has to be manually changed. By leaving it a circle all they would need to do is light up the lcl or exp sign. They can still use the circle or diamond. Only thing is that this way only the signs will matter rather than the shape. Since a diamond can still be on the local and vice versa.

So in short no need to change the map. And use only the circle bullet.

I know that this is currently not possible but, when cbtc is fully operational can they add capasity buy adding an additional car that partally platforms.

yes this will slower loading and unloading possibly increasing dwell times, but will add some breathing room for passengers

12' is what keeps the 7 from adding a 12th car. Plus a 12-car train will make things better in terms of capacity and I think it could maintain a slightly better loading/unloading dwell times due to having another 3 sets of doors for riders to move in and out of.

Also not to mention it would be easier if the R142A's are brought over by just tacking on a B car to every 5-car sets.

That would mean 6 feet feet at the begining of the train and 6 foot at the end of the train not platforming. That would not be bad. We will have to wait until CBTC is implimented though

Install platform camera's and allow the train operator up front to control the doors. It is time the MTA utilizes available technology to increase effecency

I don't think they're partially illuminated, because LEDs are fairly binary in their on/off states. More likely it's a combination of the 1/15th exposure time combined with the interior light reflecting off the unilluminated LEDs.

I'm asking can the MTA get specially designed 60' trains just for the 7.

Been there done that. The TA already experimented with a "stretch" 60ft car. It was an old R-12 numbered XC-875. It was much like the arnine XC-575 with the steel beams in the middle that added length to the ends.

I don't know if it was ever tested or not but I saw the beast myself in the scrap line at NYCH yard at 1st Ave in the early 1980's.

So I guess the experiment died.

I should have worded my response more clearly; I meant to say that they were reflecting light from the LEDs that were illuminated, making the sign harder to read.

Why don't they eliminate the side number bullet sign with a large square LED display anyway. The dedicated cars are already wired for it. And in the front, keep the roll sign but install a longer LED display underneath the rollsign. the glass is already blacked out so there is room for something.

I guess the early MTA wasn't thinking in 1968 when the R-40Ms were the first rolling stock not to have EXP - LOCAL signs on the front. Now they're scrambling to correct their mistake on the #7 line

7/11! Could use it I suppose, but it wouldn't solve the problem which is changing to the correct signage for exp or lcl without taking the time to flip through a rollsign. It looks like this is the best way to do it without swapping fleets, but hopefully the illumination problems won't be an issue with what look like cheap signs.

And hate to break it, but even back in the Identra days, the conductor's job on that line was always to yell out to the assembled hordes, "this is an EXPRESS." Heh. Despite all that tech, nothing changes. Sheesh.

I would be interested to see what they look like when set up for express service and the appropriate LED is illuminated. If the "EXP" appears on the other LED display on the opposite side of the bullet then they could easily function as marker lights, such that it wouldn't matter how unreadable the display was for regular riders. All a regular rider of the 7 Express standing somewhere between TSQ and Queensboro Plaza would have to do is see if the left or right display were illuminated, not whether it said EXP or LCL. If, on the other hand, the "EXP" reading appears on the same LED display then there'd be a problem created by the lack of readability of those small LED displays.
