My Trip to Toronto |
|
|
Posted by MainR3664 on Mon Sep 3 10:37:37 2007 I just got back from a week in Toronto, connected with some long-lost cousins, etc.I found their subway plain, but functional and clean. Not the greatest from s railfan's point of view, but from a non-railfan commuter's postion, probably perfect. But what REALLY amazed me were the street-running trolleys, with trolley poles, on almost every east-west street. I had no idea such extensive street running service still existed anywhere in the non-emerging world, much less North America. I see now that I could have learned this on world.nycsubway.org, but I didn't- sorry. Also, I know this isn't Bus Chat, but Toronto also has a fair number of fishbowls in service- maybe 10% of the buses. Between seeign family and not boring my girlfriend totally to death, I didn't get nearly as much transit time up there as I'd have liked, but I was still very impressed. |

'I had no idea such extensive street running service still existed anywhere in the non-emerging world. The east-west streetcars run on Queens Quay, King Street, Queen Street/Lakeshore, Dundas Street, and College/Carlton Streets in Downtown. There is also a route on St. Clair Avenue, which is considered "midtown". And Spadina and Bathurst have the north-south streetcar routes. |

I went to Toronto in 1999 as a sidebar to a family trip to Niagara Falls (HeyPaul, stop with the "Slowly I Turn") I always wanted to go there because of 2 of my interests, transit & horse racing. So we rode on subways and trolleys then went to Woodbine Race Track.By the way, for railfans from the observation deck of the CN Tower you can see every commuter train arrive and depart from Toronto's main station. |

There was a point in time when the TTC had an excess capacity in street cars, and was looking for alternate routes that would be useful for them. They examined many alternatives, and the only route with sufficient load that warranted it was Finch Ave E, which would be WAY off the existing track network (6 Miles at least) so getting cars to it, would require as much track as to run the line.I think I heard the Queen St. Streetcar line carried more passengers each day than the entire GO transit commuter rail train system. GO (Government of Ontario) Transit runs the regional transit that comes from outside Toronto, into Toronto. They do long haul buses (coaches like many NJT buses) and commuter rail. They typically have to share the track with freight so they barely have any time on the tracks, compared to what they want to run. They are supposed to be triple tracking the Lakeshore line, east of the city, when I left last year. The bus network is pretty extensive, but suffers from traffic delays. |

York Region (north of Toronto, population one million and growing fast) plans to widen Yonge Street and build dedicated bus lanes along the middle. But a group of York Region politicians called the "Yonge Subway North Committee" wants instead to extend the Yonge subway northwards from the busy Finch subway station into York Region. Yonge Street is continuously built-up for many miles to the north, and is served by York Region express buses. The Committee argues that, rather than going first to dedicated bus lanes it would be better to extend the subway. See here. I know this isn't Bus Chat In addition to the regular bus services, TTC now has a good many express bus routes. Also in the surrounding areas there are both local and express services. And there are GO bus services that run off-peak when GO trains are not running. |
