Absolutely, it was stupid. However, something also needed to be known was that back at that time, you were TOLD if anyone or anything was on the tracks, trains were stopped if there was any activity. Only thing we didn't get a stop order over was for a dog on the tracks and even that stops the trains now. But yes, it was incredibly stupid, I admit.

But FWIW, I was watching the iron while doing this, and had a clear shot of view or I wouldn't have even thought about it. And the cord was only a half second away from my hands if I had to pull it. Still, no excuse. I was 20 at the time and brainless.

It was around 81st, and like I just said to Tunnelrat, only a few fleeting seconds - long enough for effect, not long enough to have lost sight of where I was going.

I'll bet that RandyO remembers if you don't ... when the 42's were new, they came with (IIRC) a "Frost King" ammonia-based air conditioning system that had a nasty habit of bursting pipe and SNOWING in the car. White powder dump. Any of you guys remember those? I had one such dump on one of my trains one day and when I walked back to the car, couldn't BELIEVE the mess. :)

Another reason those Japanese units are better than their Canadian counterparts. Can you think of more from a design/operational standpoint?

Something's terribly wrong there, and I suspect it's the design specs. In Canada, they know about cab heat, and why it needs to work. :)

Which direction was downhill? I can't remember. I do remember that on my very first CPW dash, the motorman gave it juice as we reached 103rd Street. We were headed n/b.

Actually, both directions as I recall ... the "peak" was around 96th street and north and south of that point was downhill in each direction although the slope s/b into 59th was a bit gentler than the decline PLUS the ramp towards 103 ... as best I remember ...

Heh. Not a whole lot of them had working bulbs to begin with, and no ... lights going out on subway trains (including the entire car) was something that folks were So used to, they hardly noticed. Only sharp-eyed MMI's would know and even then they couldn't be sure the bulbs were intact anyway. :)

As I've said, the last time I saw an illuminated side sign on an R-1/9 was in 1968.

N/b at 103rd, the express track dives down through the station so the n/b local track can slide over. The tunnel section between 103rd and 110th is one of the very few spots on the IND where there's no crash wall bewteen the express tracks, just heavy I-beams. Then at 110th, the n/b express track ramps back up halfway through the station.
