If you read up on "the old days" you'll see how in particular on the IRT, there was a genuine need to FEAR conductors. They had the option of ejecting the unruly from a train without it stopping. :)And turnstile jumpers would get a beating from the guy in the booth. Heh. |

Fear of transit workers was its own attitude adjustment. Most people didn't even want to put themselves in the position of finding out what might happen, so such incidents were rare. Of course, back then you didn't mess with cops either since the paperwork wasn't worth their time. They'd just sit you in the back seat, take you around the block, beat the qwap out of you and then ask you if you wanted to file a complaint. :) |

Only once ... had four passengers stabbed, and I had to take the guy out with a board of education after he cut my monkey suit and stabbed me. Once he was down, some pax held him down while I found a cop. Everyone on the car was willing to "testify."I've had a few other episodes where just reaching for the board and walking towards the perps was enough to make them go find another train. :) |

When I was a c/r on the D in 1983 many conductors carried their own stuff with them. One veteran c/r had his own shoe paddle painted in his "war colors". Seemed a bit worn down, too ;-)I heard that the conductors on the LL were well prepared as well. |

Don't bother the drunks and they won't bother you. The AM hours got interesting with the rush hour and the school kids. The conductor on the D I was referring to was working AMs and getting ready to retire. He was known to tattoo the school kids if provoked. |

Bring sunscreen ... pity the old arnine trick of setting the reverser in neutral, and walking out of the cab while barreling down the right of way no longer works ... then you could step out, tap the keg, pour a cold one and sit back down when you've got yours. Heh.Had some friends show up and board my train once when I grabbed a Saturday pickup job for a day. Got onto CPW with an A behind me when I came up the ramp, so I knew there was nothing ahead of me and the bulbs were green as far as the eye could see. So I centered up, stepped out of the cab, closed the door and sat down on the opposite side. Buddy asked all panicky and so, "who's driving the train?" NOBODY! :) Ah the stuff you USED to be able to do. Train Dude got a dose of the "center up" trick once on an arnine in work service. You could have fun with that, step out of the cab, take off and put on your coat at full speed ahead in coast. For me, centering up was useful for eating my veal parm northbound and unwrapping that sucker after toasting it back to warmth on the floor heater. Did I tell you I *loved* working arnines? (grin) |
