MTA wants you to touch nothing that can cause even more damage. That is for RCI or bus maintainence personnel to do. Simple things you can possibly fix, other things let the experts do it. Don't know how it works in RTO with the crews(will find out soon), but in the DOB, you sit, wait, hope they take along time, and get put in place, if it is minor, and you can go back into service. That means a couple of trips, killed. |

Today, MTA does not want to pay an operator (Train or Bus) disability because they tried to fix something, and now they can't even grab something, due to having stumps for fingers.Future Motorman |

Not all THAT true ... they taught you how to unjam doors (you could hit it with a brake handle, but a ball pein hammer was "out of title") and you could change lamps if there were spares hidden in the bulkhead (usually there were) and you could operate certain cutout valves (after asking if it was OK to do so) but you couldn't open up anything (other than the breaker panel to throw the lamp reverser) or kick a stand to see if it would let go of your wrench (kicks limited to no more than ten) and things of that ilk. You were expected to be able to slipper out a grounded car and pull a knife switch to isolate it and several other things. But you couldn't do all THAT much without "assistance."But MOST stupid little things that would take a train out of service were permissible if you could do it quickly and safely. They wouldn't let you tear down the group switches or tweak slack adjusters though. :) |

MTA's motto is do nothing, and take the beating, until the authorities arrive. They figure if you fight back to defend yourself, it will just get more intense. My motto is, you touch me, my fist will touch your face. Some employees have "protection". |

SBR i come from a place where IF you LOOKED at somebody the wrong way your eyes will be looking for your teeth..I can handle myself, but here the key its knowing WHEN you have to do what you have to do.. The MTA says us operating personel can "try" to protect ourselves.. All im saying is you better have a bunch of people backing you up thats all.. I know of a incident or two where the person was attacked by somebody and they got the passengers as witnesses.. You do that you are in the clear...
