Not so, grasshopper! While I also did SMEE and learned P-wire, all the box in the cab requires is a repeated application of a shoe slipper until it reboots. But the "deadlocks" bit means that there are too many running programs which have hung in the system and it can no longer find its memory. Gotta love it. Train crashed several times before the "watchdog" gave up on trying to figure out where a valid entry point was. Bottom line, bad software. :) |

No, whomever wrote the SW needs to stop, step back, and re-evaluate their design.A stupid scrolling text display locking up? Good lord. This is barely graduate level programming. One big trouble is there's a LOT of CS/CE grads out there who can't program. One can even debate if you can teach programming. my guess is the vendor opted for the Indian H1B specials, and this is the result. In my experience, most Indian 'programmers' can't program their way out of a cardboard box, and US CS/CE grads aren't much better... |

If I had to guess, thefirmware was written by someone who is not a native speaker of English. This is a diagnostic/debugging message which _probably_ means that some limit on the number of retries for obtaining a resource lock had been exceeded, and now the thing is basically giving up and reporting the error. The word "obtained" and "deadlock" don't generally belong in the same sentence! |

|
Posted by SelkirkTMO on Sun Aug 5 02:33:48 2007, in response to Re: Max Deadlock Obtained, posted by Jeff H. on Sun Aug 5 02:11:53 2007. In WindowsCE ("WINCE") coding, "deadlock" means that two threads are in a mutex (mutually exclusive mode) and refuse to release because each is dependent on the other ceding control. Literally, a "mexican standoff." Apparently the code attempts to recover from the deadlock condition but is unable to ... but if you hit the books on deadlocks, you're only permitted to have 8 or 16 total (can't remember which it is now) ... but whoever coded up the announcements code has too many schmoos leaping off the cliff. :) |

I'm sure there's a programmer gonna get spanked, and it'll get fixed. It IS amusing though that a problem like this would appear "in public" instead of on the screen in the cab ... but then some booboos just WANT to be shared. :) |
