I outdid myself today:

New Caanan:

Beacon:

Croton-Harmon....first Genesis painted in Metro-North colors that I've encountered so far:

I pity any Amtrak rider on routes using the Hudson line today. In the third pic, you can see the sign stating that an Amtrak train is "70 minutes late". Those riders were lucky. Another Amtrak train was announced as being "200 minutes" late!

Horrible, but not because this line is bad to ride. I stupidly chose to take the 7:24 out of GCT, which is the only reverse peak THRU train to New Canaan, which becomes the last peak thru train (8:49). I had forgotten folks in the past saying just how crowded those reverse peak MNRR trains can get, so I was squeezed into my seat as some fatass had to get the "middle" seat on the 3-across side, and since only one track can be used reverse-peak along the Park Ave/Harlem line, we basically crawled all the way to Mount Vernon.

I will never ride a New Haven train during the rush ever again.

That's right, I had forgotten that movie was supposed to take place there. New Canaan is certainly the land of the snooty, at least from my brief 10 minute tour. The station itself looks great (the other three stations on the line look like crap). Too bad I couldn't find Christopher Russo's house, since he lives close to the railroad.

Indeed. The bottleneck is actually the Woodlawn junction. Many New Haven trains come inbound on the normally outbound tracks and have to cross over in front of northbound Harlem Line trains. Those in turn slow down everything going outbound, even NH trains that aren't directly blocked by the inbound trains.

Also, the outbound track has 10 non-revenue trains per hour heading out to Crestwood, New Rochelle, etc. for another run in addition to the 10 revenue trains, so there's no spare slack between trains.

Did I say that he was prevented from sitting there by either myself or the guy in the aisle seat? Of course he has a "right" to the seat, which is why he was given access to it despite the knowledge that both myself and the aisle guy would be quite uncomfortable.

Yeah, but his M-7 issues have to do with two things I don't have to deal with, bossy SCA's on the Rokonkoma branch and a larger rear end that must fit onto the seats. OTOH, I love them because the seats themselves are comfy, the interiors are bright, and the side windows are awesome, being low and large. Sitting on the river-side while you travel down the Hudson line is just about as good as it gets.

Every M-7 I've ridden (and I can say it's been at least 15-20 different cars now) had excellent A/C. Much more comfortable than most of the New Haven MU's and the Shoreliner coaches. The A/C on the New Haven cars suck, I've encounted more of them as "hot cars" than any other type.

I can't say much about the Shoreliners as I've only been on them a few times(Croton Harmon Open House), but when I took MNR for a few years, the Cosmopolitans(M2,4,6), didn't have great AC, but I was rarely ever on a train that had a hot car. The only time that I had ever been in a hot car was when that particular pair/triplet couldn't draw power after changeover. They were notorious for breaking down though. I would not be surprised if they have gotten worse.

I've seen a couple of outdoor closeups of this engine over at nycsubway.org.

I haven't. And I just looked again. None there except for yours. Could you show us what you are talking about?

You're an idiot. Explain to me how I will find a seat in a different car in the morning after boarding at a station where 100 or more people get on to an already crowded train. If you don't grab the first available seat you see, you won't get a seat. So shut the fuck up and get a brain.

There's none there that I've seen. Care to find them for me?

I know the cars are old, but still ...

IIRC, part of the problem is that Connecticut either pays for the maintenance or a significant portion thereof. And since they do not allocate enough money, they aren't maintained well enough.

Then perhaps the state of New York should extend the third rail from Pelham to Port Chester and run their own cars on that part of the line.
