R-42's Running On The "A" - 7/23/2007 |
|
|
Posted by William A. Padron on Mon Jul 23 08:18:08 2007 Just got off a ten-car R-42 "A" train at Chambers Street, and which was operating to Lefferts Boulevard (and with all proper signs), circa 7:30am. Car numbers used in this consist: s/#4948-4949-4924-4925-4937-4936-4934-4935-4933-4932/n.That was a wake-up call getting them, and it looks like this R-42 consist was a transfer from the "B". All this after I spent a weekend at the Transit Museum photographing the two R-10's (#3184 and #3189), and loving it too! -William A. Padron ["Lefferts Blvd, Queens"] |

I was shocked when the R-42 "A" train pulled into West 4th Street on the downtown platform. Well, anything is possible in car assignments, I guess...-William A. Padron ["207 Street, Manhattan"] |

A rumor has it since R160's are going on to the N, the Q is gonna get the R68, and the older R42 fleet as the R160A heads onto the J, M, L, and Z, the R42 will be displaced, and will go to Pitkin keeping the R68/A at Coney Island to operate on the B, Q, W as the R40S/M retires. |

I think he is talking about that there are CI Rebuilds which suck operation wise. Pull the brake and whenever it takes nobody knows. I deal with them on the J/M/Z Lines and I just pray when I make a stop. |

It's funny, because a month ago, my friend T/O had 4948/4949, North motors, and the rest of the train was R40M's, and the train still slid, so may be it's there brake valves, who knows. |

Wow.I guess I chose the wrong pick to try out the A Div. So much interesting stuff going on in the B (I had given up hope on any more than the 3 or 4 160's they had running throught last pick showing up. Now, they've taken off with them, and the shifting begins. Have all the 32's in CI gone yet? I would have thought they would be the first to go, since Pitkin/207 already has 32's. (But since the ones in CI are phase II's they would most likely go back to Jamaica where they came from, and Jamaica send Pitkin Phase I's) The 42's had basically just come over from ENY, (and awaiting more whenever the 160A1's start arriving) so I'm surprised they would be the first to get bumped over so soon. I thought they might even send the modifieds first. |

So, R-42s are coming to the (A), to replace the R-32s or R-38s that are going elsewhere? That kinda sucks. While it's interesting to see this equipment in an unusual place, and it's a perfect trade off of "train with railfan window for train with railfan window", it would've been nicer if the R-42s were coming in to replace some R-44s, which would INCREASE the number of railfan windows on the line. |

Speaking purely from a railfan perspective, someone who wants an easier time railfanning the (A) line?I remember a few years back when my dad and I set out to railfan the (A) line for the view of Jamaica Bay and the Rockaways. We waited at 42 Street - Port Authority Bus Terminal for close to 40 minutes before an R-38 going to Far Rockaway - Mott Avenue finally showed up. |
