Saw 6770 Lead car around 9:00 running express northbound this morning. It went out of service at 180th then dead headed to 239th street. does this happen every morning?

The 8:29 Utica, 9:07 Bowling Green, and 8:59 Utica run express in the Bronx and terminate at E180. But either this was something different your watch was off, since the first of those trains doesn't leave Mott until 9:17. (The last southbound express arrives at Mott at 9:16.)

There are three #5 trains that I know of that drop out at E180 before being layed up between 9:30 and 10 am.

Then why was it running express? (Some sort of blockage on the local track, perhaps?)

I have seen this from time to time when i was on the East Side a lot, why the 0750 out of ZooLots did it is beyond me but i know of a few reasons WHY they do that i will give you two exapmles, one good one bad..

Frist the Good.

Since its a drop-out at the East and there is a Dyre Ave bound 5 train right behind it along with a bunch of other trains, Mott tells the crew to go express to the East to just get the train out of the way and not have a lot of congestion at the East when the crew cleans the train out. Sometimes you have Dyre Lay-ups at the East too on M track and/or 2 Track as well.

Now the Bad...

I will make this short and sweet as possible, T/O or C/R had a "uh-oh",and they keep it moving, NOT SMART...

Somebody dropped a dime, made a phone call, this Does happen. Mott Tells them go express to East 180 Street, since its a drop out anyway so what? Who cares if the next train is ten minutes away they WANT that train now. They get there dump the train clean it out and the crew goes on its merry way...

An RCI goes on real quick opens a panel pushes a button, looks at the TOD, finds something "interesting" train goes RIGHT to the Barn...

Depending on the situtation, Before they do thier Next Trip or Sign Out somebody is talking to somebody donwtown, and its not a "how are you doing" chat either.

I will leave it at that anybody who posts here who works in RTO knows how the rest of the story goes..

Beleive It Or Not...

But how can that train run up the middle track when southbound trains are still using it?

Beacuse they can thats why...

A twist here and there at Unionport on the baord, get on the radio and tell the S/B 5 train to go express on the local..

See its that easy, since the last S/B express leaves Dyre at 0853 hrs i have seen it on the local track myself at the East.
