Because of this, they have a higher braking rate than the M1/3s. Unfortunately this does not really help the flat wheel problem the M7s have.Flat spots are always caused by slip-slide. This is not caused by their weight as some people claim. There are heavier railcars than the M7s that hardly have flats at all like the C3s and M2s. The problem is the Automatic Speed Control the M7s have which causes the brakes to go in full service or BIE. |

A trainset speaks volumes when you walk undercar and inspect carefully. Having a 'tooth' pulled out with pressure exceeding 105 tons must hurt....thats more than 200K PSI! Comparative example is my rebuild of ATC array....Huck bolt blind 3/8ths fasteners shear at 10K PSI with a bang......105 ton is a big number! RRCI Peter |

Because of this, they have a higher braking rate than the M1/3s."The M7 seems to have a clumsy feel to it though insofar as it seems to always be a case of applying the brakes too hard at first; is there less control over the higher braking rate? "Flat spots are always caused by slip-slide. This is not caused by their weight as some people claim." M7 cars - I don't know quite how to explain - have a heavy feel to them. I doubt it much affects the flat spots, except indirectly maybe. What is the braking rate on the C3 and/or M2 cars relative to M7? |

Like that back in my day usually as well ... particularly the PM half of the tour ... now kick back and think about what the splits were like. You climbed up at oh dark hundred, did your round trip from Stillwell to the Bronx and back, then had six hours to shuffle around Coney with nothing to do. Most of the guys hit the gin mill and didn't shape up for the PM tour. Heh.Even if you made it back on time, it was you to go because the interval before yours was ABD'd because the crew for that run was flat on its face in the TMO's toilet. :) Wonder why the splits went away? TWU didn't get tough, they got tired of ABD's. Heh. |

You drill the hole, place the 'Huck bolt 'blind rivet' in the hole and apply the pneunatic/hydraulic gun. BOOM.....just be sure the rubber deflector directs the broken stud away from you. What ocurs is that the gun draws in the stem of the blind rivet under extreme pressure to break it.....my small pneumatic gun can exercise 9,980 PSI upon a 3/8ths fastener...no labeled warning of noise level. Bigger hydraulic guns are even louder...it is the noise of rivet shaft being broken...shaft of rivet is hardened steel. Just part of a days work. it is good to have a good job. RRCI Peter |

Wheel circumference is measured using a special "tape measure" witha bunch of little clips to make sure the measurement is taken at a specific place on the wheel tread profile. The tape reads in terms of 1/8" increments in wheel diameter. As train dude said, there must be no more than 3 tape numbers difference between the smallest and the largest wheel on a truck. Wheels on same axle are most sensitive to diameter mismatch for what should be obvious reasons. One axle in the truck being larger than the other is less sensitive but it will cause the weight to be distributed unequally, and therefore one axle will be more likely to spin during motoring or slide during braking. |

We had to stop in the station and remain there for a couple hours for fear that if we were to continue that the armature would completely disconnect and cause a derailment. Fortunately, we were at a station where other trains could easily run around us. Once the RCI came and disconnected the motors (which cut off direct power to the armature,) the train was then able to limp directly to the CI main shop for immediate truck replacement. |
