At least with respect to the new tech M7, news reports seemed to fault them for a lack of sophistication, that especially wheels slipping/sliding on leaf oil/grease was attributable to automatic over-reaction; it was mentioned that new software might help this problem.

The tighter the wheel tolerance, the closer the speed between the wheels. Systems that require tight wheel tolerances need the wheels to be operating at close to the same speed. The sensors found in an AC system are only there because of the need to keep the wheels operating at very close to the same speed.

Keep in mind that propulsion systems essentially link (electrically or mechanically) a single power supply to a group of wheels. A diesel hydraulic system requires that all wheels are operating at essentially the same speed as all of the wheels are ultimately driven from the same gear. Allowable wheel speed differences (and hence diameter) are then limited by the tolerance stack up of the components in the drive train. Electrical propulsion systems are essentially the same only the drive train from the power source to the wheel consists of fewer components: cabling and the traction motors. The characteristics of the motors then become the determining factor.

They're plenty sophisticated, just require some tuning which is not at all uncommon. I don't know if it's the case with the M-7's but propulsion systems are so higly integrated with other systems that sometimes you have propulsion system problems creating issues for other systems (and vice versa). As an example, frequent propulsion system shutdowns on a given car may result in no dynamic brakes which in turn results in much greater friction brake usage which finally may result in premature wear and/or failure of air brake equipment and may even affect wheel life!

Also, AC propulsion is often frequency controlled. That is, the frequency of the input voltage determines the rotational speed of an AC induction motor. If two axles are driven by the same VVVF AC controller, they will be electrically geared together.

The rotational speed of DC motors with commutation is controlled by input voltage to the stator and rotor coils. Commutation allows a wide range of balancing speeds under a wide range of loads with the same electrical input.

TThank you. However, although the same electrical input arrives at all motors, it is possible that the translation to mechanical output may not be the same (due to problems with the bearings, lubrication, or some moving part. This could cause the motors to go out of sync.

Does this result in a warning displayed in the cab?

You go too fast with bad Flatz and see how fast that train could possibliy wind up on the ground, i wasnt taking that chance, not to mention i was only going 5 Stops..

Then what are you going to say?

Im not down here to do something careless like that and then wind up going to Labor Relations and trying to explain myself..

Why can't you go fast on flats? Everytime I've been on the Low-Vs during museum runs it had flats and it went fast without a problem.

Spotted wheels are one thing..

I get a train with those from time to time(not to bad though so 240 Yard Barn does keep that in check) while working the 1 Line on the Weekend..

Flatz are something totally different...

Remember - loose lips sink ships and this particular young man has the loosest lips I've seen outside of a copy of Hustler magazine. I don't believe that I ever saw a training video that was any good BUT Dave Pirrmann did see the Wheel Truing Machine in Jamaica Shop in operation many years ago and he may still have some pictures on his site.

Any picture of Simmons does not do justice to its horizontal profile cutter. Machine design is pre-war (WW2) and attributed to 'winning the war.' Present machine is original with operator input engaging software for proper operation of automatic operations...always better off in full manual. Motion of machine and horizontal profile cutter is under hydraulic motion....a good crew can pass a truck in 45 minutes.

A spot is a dot....a flat requires damage of several inches of tread cutting to attain damage of significance to 1/8th" of depth or more per NYCTA standards. A 36" diameter wheel has an approximate circumference of 112" and a to get a flat of 1/8" deep requires a skid 4" in legnth....just don't cite me as a 'nuklear' mathemetician.

Wheels stay crispier longer with the use of Crisco. RRCI Peter

Now watching the 1924 Niles machine at Branford, that's an

When a wheel is trued, are both wheels on the axle trued, are all wheels on the truck trued at the same time?
I've noticed,eyeball measure, that most wheels on a car, and sometimes in a set of two or four cars are about the same thickness.
Does this mean the these cars are re-wheeled at the same time?

So the wheel is literally stamped into the axle.

Grumman Corp used a similar process for assembling certain parts in the wingboxes of the F-14.

Not THAT one ... never thought I could get in trouble for "time and temperature" along with "you are here" and "don't bother running for that train across the platform, it's already leaving" but I did. And today, they've got even LESS of a sense of humor. :(

Nope ... learned my lesson way back then. Always volunteer for a train that had no PA. :)
