It is only when the flat spot is sufficiently significant to affect the safety of the train that it is a "failure."You like posting frivolously, don't you? |

In Stephen's defense, pounding wheels break rails ... so there may be a valid point in his wondering WHO ends up getting charged when the inevtiable occurs when either the wheel stops turning and starts fires or when rails or switch points get hammered too hard ...Round wheels are HAPPY wheels ... :) |

However, you can't "true" every wheel every day, and in the fall and winter, trains frequently skid due to inclement weather and leaves. So you're going to have some flat wheels. |

"clop-clop-clop" was the sound of Artens ... "bang-bang-bang" is John Witherspoon ... so the question would be "how bad is it?" Knowing the original reporter personally, I'd say it had Witherspooned or he wouldn't have pointed it out. "Bang-bang-bang-bang-bang" breaks rails ...Definitely something to point out to the crew on the train so it can be written up. You really don't want clod-hoppers out there now beating the iron when it's shrinking. And "skid season" is over now ... time for all good trains to visit Mr. Simmons. :) |

BANG BANG BANG....when we were under the "creek" and he tried to pick up some speed...it was an endless synphony of sounds that killed my ears and rattled my body. Believe me..after messin around on the freakin bus half the night..the last thing I needed was to be busted up by a jacked up train. It was late..so I didn't want to get off, waiting for the NEXT train[that time of night]at 20 minute intervales. Needless to say,the homeless person made the trip damn near unbearable in that particular car..so I moved at Metropolitan... 5522 was fubar. Pity..and I always liked the R46 cars, too. |

I'm sure our buddies will be out looking for it. :)I had a feeling it was four inches or more, and given your description, sounds like it's ready to light some track fires soon, assuming the line doesn't get jacked for "broken rail." :( So you're back out on the road again? |

WAY back in the day (20 years ago) the Sixth Ave. shuttle used 6 car consists of R27's which had wheels so mishaped, the train bounced up and down. True...and that one car in the consist may have been the only one with flatzzzz. NYCTA subways do not 'earn' major flats like freight or heavy passenger rail due to slower speeds and less weight....problem can be with failures in propulsion/dynamic braking or simply 'stuck brakes.'
