When did I use the words "ever so greatly improve"?

They are not of "very little importance". For example, they likely rank MUCH higher in importance than the announcement that "bags and other large containers are subject to random search", and that is repeated thousands of times per day.

Note "slightly."

On the R142s the HVAC is already abysmal, so it makes little difference.

Nobody's calling it a necessity.

But I think it's very much in NYCT's interest for members of the public who happen to be curious about how the system works to satisfy their curiosity, and a railfan window is one obvious means to that end. I've helped quite a few confused passengers when a train ends up on a track it normally doesn't use if I happen to know where that track leads. And how do I know where that track leads? Not by blindly memorizing a book of track maps, that's for sure.

So it's not a necessity, but it would certainly be a desireable feature to maintain.

Let me make this crystal clear. When I sit down on an R-142 seat, the seat jabs me sharply in the back, at a point where my back does not bend. It is about as uncomfortable as a seat could possibly be.

It appears from this thread that I'm not the only one who does not fit into the R-142 seat.

You do? Mazel tov. But for the rest of us, it's awful.

You don't need an air duct right next to you to do that. I've been in that position. I'm not saying that being right under the air duct isn't better; I'm saying I've never felt uncomfortable.

It could well be that the car David was riding in had bad A/C. I was not on his car. If he says he was uncomfortable, I believe him. But I do not believe his generalization, because my personal experience with it does not support it.

My personal experience of riding the R142/As every day for 5 years follows exactly what david says. They are abysmal at car ends, and are abysmal when there are more then a few people standing.

More evidence that the MTA finds the R142 air circulation to be poor is the fact that they put in strong vents at the ends of cars on the R143.

This isn't the first time he's been caught fabricating the facts, and I doubt it will be the last.

If the air conditioning system actually lowers the temperature in the car to an appreciable degree, then the duct placement isn't terribly critical.

But if the air coming out of the HVAC system isn't really very cool at all, and it only feels cool when a strong fan blows it directly at you, then anybody who isn't in the direct airflow of a duct is out of luck.
