As far as MOD Trips-they are done with. They were great while they lasted. But the turnouts for each trip were getting lower and lower. The last MOD Trip back on May 1st, 2005 had more photographers than riders. Only 40-50 people paid to ride the train. The problem was that the IRT was being overdone. There was a trip planned for Lo-Vs to the Rockaways but it was cancelled. I'm sure that trip would've seen high ridership. |

Question re: BUs and R1-9s on same consist |

Posted by Howard Fein on Thu May 18 20:04:19 2006, in response to Re: TM Nostalgia Train To Return This Summer - consist rumor, posted by Terrapin Station on Thu May 18 13:41:34 2006. When I gave my check to Luz at the Museum this afternoon, she confirmed that the June 17 trip consist would be made up of both. She further stated that we wouldn't be allowed to ride the BUs while underground, but that when the train came outside we would be able to board them. I tried to ask the logistics of this but she had to answer the phone, and I had to get back to work. What I'm wondering is, where would such a transfer occur? Would we pull into the siding by the abandoned Racetrack platform and everybody moves from the 1/9s into the BUs? Will the BUs be uncoupled and run on their own? If so, will they take a different route than the 1/9s, f'rinstance one consist to Far Rock and the other to Rock Park? There had been a MOD trip combining 1/9s and BUs back in July '04. A prior commitment kept me from going on it, but I was able to 'see it off' that morning from Columbus Circle. It looked like people WERE riding in the BUs when it departed. So what was the format? The other thing I didn't get to ask is where the June 17 trip would originate. I'm putting money on Columbus Circle. That's where a TM trip with D types I took in 2000 originated. The center platform is handy to keep railfans apart from regular people. |

Back in 2004, the BU's were cut and run seperatley on above ground routes. When we went to the Rockaways, the BU's were cut from the R1/9's at Rockaway Park during the lunch break. On the Brighton line, it was usually done at Church Ave. The BU's never carried railfans on underground routes. Everyone had to ride in the steels. Only crews rode inside the wooden cars underground. |
