My list was short only because I was making it off the top of my head. I suspect that you'd find an apartment building / complex within walking distance (say 1/2 mile) of every Nassau County LIRR station with the exception of Westwood, Lakeview, Hemsptead Gardens, Country Life Press, Nassau Blvd, Stewart Manor, Carle Place, Cold Spring Harbor, Plandome and many of the Oyster Bay branch stations. If you want to cut the distance down to just a block or two, you could probably scratch Bellerose, Island Park and maybe some others off the list. Again, this is just off memory alone.Garden City has two very large complexes just north of the Garden City Hotel (actually, it may just be one complex with two large buildings). In addition, I recall more residential buildings along Stewart Ave and Seventh Street. I thought Valley Stream had more multi-family units along both Roosevelt Avenue and Rockaway Avenue. But perhaps you're more familiar with the details there. |

There will be another increase in dual mode service by the fall. With the march schedules, they have added a new Speonk dual mode train. Currently there are twoi or three on the port Jefferson line, two on the SPeonk runs, and one on the Oyster Bay line. They are looking to add another by fall. While he has said it will "probably" be put into service on the Speonk line, Oyster Bay has not been ruled out. They only have 22 dual mode locomotives, because out of the 23 they had, one was completely lost to fire. I have a question: Why do the Dual-Mode trains that go into Manhattan have two locomotives at each end instead of the usual one locomotive I usually see on diesel trains? They are EXTREMELY happy with the performance of the M7's. They have surpased all expectations. They had been expected to run at least 100,000 miles between breakdowns, and have consistintly exceeded that by landslides. Their are currently 800 and change M7's in service, 172 M3's, and 80-something M1's left. The M1's are expected to be completely gone in the near future. The M3's will be upgraded, and they have an option for more equipment. The diesel fleet has not been as promising, however, over the past few years they have become more and more reliable as the DM/DE30's are rebuilt. They are performing better than ever, although still under where they should have. There is about 180 M1s in service as of now, with the majority them being CCM (overhauled) M1s, there are around 80 non-overhauled M1s (I rode one last week) left. The M3s are in the process of being overhauled in phases. The first phase is completed with the next phase underway. 8) |

Either way, I definitely remember "80". Whether there was a "1" in front of that or not, is up for debate.... The 172 M3's I am 100% sure about. |

Of course it was discussed on the demolition of PD Tower, and the new signalling system between Patchogue and Speonk. They don't have any more new service planned of the Montauk Branch though at this time, other than the potential autumn addition of a third dual mode out of Speonk. It's either going there or Oyster Bay, they haven't decided yet. Eventually, they they will look at developing service between Speonk and Patchogue a bit, but not yet.No further electrification of the Montauk branch is being planned or being looked at at this time. |

You could stall a whole subway train in there if you were not careful. The engineer in the cab car can not see where the gaps are vis a vis the third rail pickups on his locomotive at the other end of the train.AMTK can do it because the engine is always in the lead, and the engineer can see the gaps and not stop on one of them. That said, the LION would put third rail pickups on the cab-car, and hard wire them back to the locomotive. Yes, the LION knows all about trying to cut cars with a live 750 volt trained lion, but the cutout can be in the cab car and it could be easily isolated once the train is running on diesel power. Besides most diesel yards are sans third rail anyway. ROAR (Lions are SMART... but nobody listens.) |

We do it opposite for dynamic testing of MNCR M7s on LIRR trackage. The world runs 'under-rail.' Subways and LIRR run over-rail. To run a P32ac on MNCR requires a mechanical adaptor on the shoe beam and a specific under-rail contact shoe...you cannot put a shoe upside down because undershoe uses a different shoe tension mechanism and shoe. Once contact shoe adaptor is installed, the adjustment with a shoe beam gauge is minor. Of course, what you cannot do is make the temporary moification in shop and move it back out on third rail overshoe.....OUCH! MNCR M7s are towed into Arch Street sans shoes. RRCI Peter |
