The way I understand it,there were 5 lirr engineers[not train]working on the design.their p.c.`s did not interface with each other. When brought to the builder they were told :this won`t work"let us build a double ended GP40 and it will work.as it stands now,you have a single ended engine on a deadend RR.This was told to me when the DM`S first arrived on the property. The work train conductor in charge of Holban yard was the person who informed me of this. |

One of things that I've noticed when I've taken commuter rail is that on NJT and MNCR, you notice a slight build up in density near the train stations. You'll see apartments, condos, and multi-story commercial developments. In contrast, on the LIRR, it's rare to see such development.I think you're somewhat mistaken there. In Nassau County, you'll find that the apartment and condo developments are typically located right near (within, say 1/2 mile -- a 10 minute walk) the LIRR stations -- off the top of my head this is the case in Valley Stream, Lynbrook, Rockville Centre, Baldwin, Freeport, Centre Avenue, Oceanside, Gibson, Woodmere, Garden City, Great Neck, Mineola, Westbury (which is teeming with new residential condo construction) and probably a bunch of others. The captioned statement is probably more accurate in Suffolk County where development came later and is more clustered around highways and main roads rather than railroad stations. |

And they accelerate at something around .25mph/s with only 16000hp per train. If each car of the 112 cars weighs 143 tons and the four or so locomotives weigh 200 tons apiece then the power to weight ratio is 0.95 hp per ton. By comparison the 1000hp 128,000lb M7 has a power to weight ratio of 15.625hp per ton. |

If I understand this correctly, it helps limit acceleration at first but then increases it later so passengers don't feel a jerking motion or get injured when the train first pulls out (and so the train can stop quickly if someone is being dragged).Thank you. |
