Whenever you feel like actually learning something instead of obsessing about nonsense, consult the archives of the Wall Street Journal or Barrons and look fr articles on railcar manufacturing.

At one time Budd would have reported financial results but when they became a unit of Thyssen they would not have had to do that. A look at their contract wins, contract bids and percentage of revenue vs. profit from railcars is quite instructive.

as Budd was leaving, Morrison-Knudsen thought maybe it had a way to make money on rebuilding subway cars. Not only could they not make money on it (even though they did a decent job rebuilding the cars) that adventure cost the CEO his job.

That really was more a function of the propulsion subcontractors, not Budd itself. GM and Voith (IIRC it was their torque converter) just couldn't put together a propulsion package that was suited to the rigors of railroad use.

They had way more hits than misses. To wit their R32 are still a joy to ride; a run from W4 to Sutphin aboard #3607 (a rerouted "E") at the RFW with 'Parallel Lines' on the headphones was pure bliss. And I think that the M1 could certainly get a few more years out of them if they wanted to. Then there's that 1953 sleeper/cafe they're running up in Mass. That's longevity for you!

OK, I agree Ronkonkoma isn't comparable to White Plains or Stamford for lots of reasons.

But the area beyond Ronkonkoma is a lot more densely populated than the area beyond Brewster or Suffern. And certainly Ronkonkoma has far more riders than either of those stations.

It's not really a matter of density though. Ronkonkoma is a populated area, but it's certainly not a "city" sort of area like Stamford or White Plains, and the property values around the station certainly don't refelect the fact that thousands upon thousands of people come through there, and have been for 20 years. In fact, the area (again, immediately around the station) is probably more depressed than before the electrification came. Not only do the commuters not use the stores that used to be there (and now vacant), all the cars and "no place to park" scenario stopped even locals from partonizing the businesses near the station, that's why that shopping center and stores near there are all vacant, or run down.

So no one else but the Port Washington and Long Beach people get access to the east side? All because a few trainsets are double decker? Then what about all the other lines that had to have M7 like trains because they can't fit into Flatbush or 63rd St? Spend money on designing two sets of new trains? Many of which can only be used on certain lines, and others that can't be used on certain lines? When now they can send a train anywhere?

Currently, at rush hours, most lines get trains that go to both terminals. It's evenly spread out. Off peak granted, some go more to Brooklyn, and some go more to Penn, but rush hours everyone gets direct trains to and from Penn, etc.

Because he only wants to put double deckers on some lines, which can't go to Grand Central, or Flatbush (well that's irrelevant for Port Washington, but you get the idea).
Currently they have the flexibility in the schedule to ssend any electric train anywhere. Everyone gets direct Penn at rush hours. I believe everyone even gets direct Brooklyn. Add double deckers to that, and you lose that flexibility. Not to mention having to design two different sets of cars, and more than half the people will still have the "m7" seating anyway, as they have to still order them.

Yes, he mentioned Ronkonkoma is being looked into to be double tracked. I forgot if he said initial funding was there or not. I know he said they had initial funding for electrification towards Yaphank, because of the scrapping of the Port Jeff line yard and electrification. It's only in the beginning stages though, they haven't even officially settled on sites yet, which is the first step.

At the very least I would have made note of that subhuman slimeball dirtbag's officer's badge number and reported him to the ACLU considering that the MTA made a promise to the ACLU that this behavior would stop.

For guys, yes. Women think they're going to take care of both of them.

For ladies it's more difficult. A few of my friends are beautiful, educated, comely women, single moms, great conversationalists, sex appeal all over them, and they can't get men to commit to them. Sometimes a first date turns into a disaster (but if the guy uses his head, it doesn't have to).

I don't have their lives in my hands, just their retirement annuities.

Fortunately, most of the time when we have to fix someone else's mistake, it's to tell the annuitant they're getting more money than they were expecting, or sometimes even to tell them that they are getting money they weren't expecting. Somehow it's rare that a company accidentally told someone too high a figure and now we have to go and reduce it on them.

Though there was the one poor shlemiel who got into an argument with his boss and quit 1 month before his 55th birthday, not realizing that the very heavily subsidized early retirement only applied to people still at work on their 55th birthday.

I didn't get my ASA until I was 46 - even though it was my first career!
