I fly out of JFK a lot, usually 2-3x a month. I can't imagine why so many people take the A train... maybe just force of habit.

Of course the LIRR is the fastest way to Jamaica/AirTrain but from midtown, the E takes only about 10-12 minutes longer than the LIRR... and is a WHOLE lot faster than the A to Howard Beach. I'm always amazed to see throngs of people at 42nd/8th, obviously on their way to JFK, waiting for a downtown A when they'd do much better crossing over and taking the uptown E.

However, an important factor is luggage... and time of day. If someone's juggling lots of bags on the E, inbound in the morning or outbound in the afternoon would be a nightmare.

It also amazes me. I don't rind the A to be the "airport train" really anymore. Of course, it is "an" airt train, but I feel THE airport train is the E from Manhattan to Jamaica. Why anyone would treck all the way to Howard Beach is beyond me (unless of course on the Brooklyn IND).

Manhattan is not a single point.

Somebody coming from lower Manhattan is better off on the A.

Somebody coming from somewhere uptown on the A, especially with a lot of luggage, is probably better off staying on the A (especially if a Far Rock train comes first) than making the additional transfer to the E.

And then there are the people who have somehow discovered the barely publicized Q10 and prefer to use it over the AirTrain option.

Taking rail with a ;ot of bags is more difficult than using a car service. That's true of any rail service except one where you can check your bags.

But if your party has 2 bags per person, there isn't a problem so long as you have elevators and escalators to use.

Plus, unlike the LIRR, which is as luggage-friendly as you could ask of a commuter line, the subway doesn't have a lot of ADA-compliant stations with elevators and ramps. That situation is improving, slowly. For example, the E is elevato equipped from its Jamaica Terminal to the QB line; Kew Gardens is not ADA compliant, but Roosevelt-Jackson Heights is and so is Queens Plaza (if they've finally turned on those elevators), Lexington-53rd (if they are done with that project) and Penn Station.

So there are some limitations, no doubt. I personally like to travel light (one big bag and one little one I can carry; maybe a backpack too sometimes) so I can handle rail easily. If I carry more, I couldn't use rail at all.

The reality is that it really should be called the Howard Beach Express since that is the community it really served. The train did not stop in poor areas along the way to the city, so it became an "exclusive train" for them.

Actually, they are better off transferring to the LIRR at Penn Station. Any train except the Port Washington train will connect them to AirTrain.

If they rank strictly by price, though, staying on the A is the way to go, since you trade time for money.

If the riders don't give a shit, how come many of the people at the public hearing for Ride-On's Germantown Restructuring were complaining about the fact they had to change buses to reach the Metro? Those people are not transit fans, I can assure you of that. And I have plenty of other similar examples of how transfers can discourage transit use.

Sorry Ron but the argument doesn't work that way. These people had a bus-subway commute that became a bus-bus-subway commute. You try publicizing this, explaining to people why it must be done, what the benefits are, and try ignoring their complaint that they don't want to have to wait in the cold or summer heat for another bus. When they moved to Germantown years ago, they knew there was no subway, but did not expect the service change. While I think there are problems with the Ride-On changes, some of which are beyond RO's control due to where their facilities are and how they are laid out, overall the change has been good and ridership numbers indicate that.

Have you ever tried transfering from Airtrain to the subway or LIRR at Jamacia? I wouldn't exactly call it a seamless or pleasant connection, especially if I have luggage. Then again, I did it when there was still construction going on at the complex, but even so. It is also expensive. Good train to airport connections are one-seat rides. You can get from almost anywhere in downtown DC to National Airport without a change of trains, and the subway station is right next to the main terminal. You can get from practically anywhere in downtown Chicago to either Midway or O'Hare Airport without a change in trains, and most terminals at O'Hare only require a long walk at most (there is the one exception). The new terminal at Midway reduced the walk from the terminal to the subway station.

And until you start giving the people who you don't agree with more respect, I will continue to lose respect for you and your ideas. I am sure other people will do the same. Then again, you certainly gave me and one other poster who you have been quite rude to in this thread a number of amusing topics to discuss over the past week over the meals we've had together. Maybe you should keep it up, your ideas provide for very good dinner conversation.

The foamers like you are employees the agency never knew it had. Most of the time it doesn't cost them anything, so it's OK.

Chicago has one central business district, and it's smaller than New York's (which has several CBDs). Even so, you'd still have to hike to a train through the streets if you were 100% allergic to changing trains.

Comparing Reagan to JFK is ridiculous, but you already know that. La Guardia is the appropriate comparison point.

Which is why the airTrain arrangement is far superior to it. The distance from any AirTrain station to your gate is much less and there are no exceptions.

Yes, this was very nicely designed, bravo for them. But that's a LaGuardia class airport, not JFK.

If you want respect for your knowledge and ability to reason, you'll have to earn it. You're a good photographer who otherwise is an ignorant immature foamer. That's a fact. The only way to get around that is for you to educate yourself and grow up.

About 50 minutes or so. It grinds and screeches and makes lots of stops but if you look at your watch and compare travel times, you'll see it's really pretty good, most of the time. The skip-stop is a little better and the express run which skips M-served stations helps too.

Ron,

You need to stop ignoring the critical points of my argument. If you bothered to read my original post, you would see that when I was there, the facility was under construction. I made that fact clear. You outright ignored it in an attempt to prove me wrong. I'm glad to hear that the finished product is seamless. I shall have to go and check it out sometime.

Also, the people who are going to be given a stack of brochures, told to stand out at some subway station, and hand them out for 4 hours are not managers. They are going to be entry level employees who don't make decisions going into service changes. Their job is to simply give out the information they are provided, and they are not trained to deal with everyone's complaints and specific problems. Also, it is the job of the agency to serve its customers, and I'm not so sure many customers would turn down evening, weekend, and midday service they did not formerly have just to retain their one-seat ride to the Metro. If you ask me, the Germantown Restructuring is sucessful by virtue of increasing the amount of service to a growing community within a much shorter period of time than had the existing routes not been changed.

There are many people here who disagree with you, Ron. Regardless of who is right, your name-calling and other childlike behavior is not conducive to civil conversation and debate. Please cease and desist, it would make discussing these matters with you much easier.
