Posted by tunnel rat on Fri Nov 11 08:50:12 2005, in response to Re: nevins st,lower level, posted by monorail on Fri Nov 11 02:05:11 2005. no,picture this,you are on the road bed walking towards atlantic ave.where the tunnel splits into 2 tunnels,the right being the one where the ind G line has been built thru,you go left.that is the 4th ave. underpass.it is sealed up in 2 sections.the same t.a.light maintainer who told me about the R line tunnel going past 95st to 101st told me to walk to the lirr/irt connection at atlantic ave,where the cut begins,apx.50 feet off the platform is a grating,when you pull it up you go down a ladder apx,.15feet to another level,then you go down another ladder,apx.15feet to the sealed up roadbed.it runs about 90feet.the 2nd.sealed up section,facing atlantic ave.is a brick wall that the t.a. has broken thru it is a tunnel that has no flooring,just 16x16inch bracing beams.the tunnel stops at the stations edge.so you have apx, 140 feet of tunnel sealed in 2 sections.I hope you find this interesting. |

The army would never lose a shipment of tanks and not find them.he was pulling your chain.I heard from a signal maintainer that beyound the cinder block wall on the yard leads going to 76st.there was a forgotten low V,I told its just a legend.the 2 cops I worked with in the 75pct.who were actualy in the station said there is nothing but roadbed up to the e/b station,all track,3rd rail and signals were long since removed.I,m gone for the weekend so I,ll talk to you monday afternoon. |

I read in Cunningham and Dehart's Brooklyn book that in 1911, the IRT had proposed using the north side tracks of the Manhattan Bridge to connect a rebuilt 3rd Ave. El to the Nevins Street lower level. They were turned down and both sets of tracks were given to the BRT. Anyone know any more about this? |
