where is the sealed up part
the compressor area?
the room that used to block direct access to the lower level from atlantic ave?

no,picture this, you are on the road bed walking towards atlantic ave.where the tunnel splits into 2 tunnels, the right being the one where the ind G line has been built thru, you go left.that is the 4th ave. underpass.it is sealed up in 2 sections.the same t.a.light maintainer who told me about the R line tunnel going past 95st to 101st told me to walk to the lirr/irt connection at atlantic ave, where the cut begins,apx.50 feet off the platform is a grating, when you pull it up you go down a ladder apx,.15feet to another level, then you go down another ladder,apx.15feet to the sealed up roadbed.it runs about 90feet.the 2nd.sealed up section, facing atlantic ave.is a brick wall that the t.a. has broken thru it is a tunnel that has no flooring, just 16x16inch bracing beams.the tunnel stops at the stations edge.so you have apx, 140 feet of tunnel sealed in 2 sections.I hope you find this interesting.

i know the grating you are referring to
perhaps I'll check it out

While in construction flagging, I was told about a tunnel somewhere that had flatcars loaded with WW1 tanks
The flagman who started this rumor(or fact) retired before I had a chance to ask him
It sounded very much unbelievable, I was told that there is access somewhere in the system to this tunnel

The army would never lose a shipment of tanks and not find them.he was pulling your chain.I heard from a signal maintainer that beyound the cinder block wall on the yard leads going to 76st.there was a forgotten low V,I told its just a legend.the 2 cops I worked with in the 75pct.who were actualy in the station said there is nothing but roadbed up to the e/b station, all track,3rd rail and signals were long since removed.I,m gone for the weekend so I,ll talk to you monday afternoon.

I read in Cunningham and Dehart's Brooklyn book that in 1911, the IRT had proposed using the north side tracks of the Manhattan Bridge to connect a rebuilt 3rd Ave. El to the Nevins Street lower level. They were turned down and both sets of tracks were given to the BRT. Anyone know any more about this?
