This is the last day for trackless trolley service in Winnipeg, Manitoba.I'm puzzled. Trackless trolleys seemed to have a popular phase. Obviously they are much more flexible in getting around stuck cars than rail based trolleys. But why have they gotten phased out? IIRC Seattle was still phasing IN trackless trolleys in the late 1970s. |

Trackless trolleys in Seattle and San Fran were good on the hills, probably the reason they kept them. In the late 70s, Seattle rebuilt its network and got modern equipment to run. I think they still use them. I was riding my bike one time on Capital Hill and almost got hit by one because I didn't hear it behind me as they were pretty much silent. |

A persin at the meeting kindly pointed out that the energy came from a city owned dam rather than an oil co. selling diesel fuel. Math won. |

Maintaining the network of overhead wires must have been a nightmare, not to mention how unsightly they were. I remember seeing them in Brooklyn near Flatbush & Atlantic. The wires had to accommodate the busses that were going straight and the busses that were turning. |

I remember the kids hanging off the bumpers when I rode one of the routes from Empire and Flatbush, either the 47 or 48. One went up Franklin, the other Kingston, but they were called the Tompkins and Lorimer lines. Not sure which was which. |
