Posted by irtredbirdr33 on Sat Sep 19 08:44:12 2026 Tuscarora Almanac for September 19 1918 – from The Book of First Runs The Whitehall Street station on the BMT Broadway Line opens for passenger service. Trains had been terminating there since January 5, 1918 but had been running light south of Rector Street. 1952 – from The Book of Wrecks The New York, Ontario & Western Railroad big coal dock at Cornwall, New York is destroyed. A fire had broken out aboard a Liberian freighter and the vessel docked there in order to put out the blaze. The fire was extinguished but the dock itself burnt to the ground. It was not rebuilt as coal loadings for the O&W had significantly declined. Source: “The Final Years, New York, Ontario & Western Railway” (Carstens Publications / 1977) by Mr. John Krause and Mr. Ed Crist 1955 – from The Book of Last Runs This is the last day of streetcar service in Winnipeg, Manitoba. 1966 – from The Book of Last Runs Track 3 of the 42nd Street Shuttle is taken out of service for about three months. This will permit replacement of the wooden platform over Track 2 at Times Square with a concrete one. 2002 – from The Book of First Runs The Delaware-Lackawanna Railroad re-opens the former Laurel Line Crown Avenue Tunnel in Scranton, PA. The tunnel will now be used by DLRR freight trains and trolleys of the Electric City Trolley Museum. The first run is made by former Red Arrow Center Door Car No. 76. Larry, RedbirdR33 |

I'm guessing they also went to flourescent lighting on the shuttle platorms at Grand Central around the same time as the work to replace the wooden platform with concrete. There are pictures from May 1966 of the shuttle platforms still having incondencent lighting that made them look very dark (this also was before the tiling of the walls, both occurred by the time the next pictures of that platform at Grand Central were taken in 1968). |
