When the leaves start turning colors I am suddenly reminded that I need to get out to HARRIS tower before it closes for the season. 2025 would be no different, but earlier in the week I had spent some time at the Hanover Road grade crossing on the CSX Capitol Sub to catch some afternoon MARC Camden Line runs so I am going to combine those two events into one set of photos

Starting with HARRIS tower, NS Pittsburgh Line traffic was robust as ever. First to pass by that day was a three unit light engine move consisting of NS AC44C6M #4626, C40-10W #7558 and SD70ACe #1023, heading to the Harrisburg fuel pad from the Rutherford intermodal yard.

This was followed by a westbound intermodal train with C40-10W #7592 and AC44C6M #4665,

After that was an eastbound TOFC train with 2 C40's-10W #7536 and #7698 running elephant style.

HARRIS tower's latest attraction is a web enabled PRR position light mast that can cycle through all of the popular signal indications using an interface on the HARRIS tower website.

While out front I managed to catch several passing locomotives through the chain link including AC44C6M #4794, C44-9W #9920, AC44C6M #4621, GP38-3 #5835 and GP38-2 #5665.

Next to appear was a westbound manifest train with AC44C6M #4596 and ET44AC #8004 with AC44C6M #4532 in a DPU position.

After this was an eastbound intermodal train with C40-10W #7564 and AC44C6M #4721 also running elephant style.

If the 3 unit lite engine move hadn't been enough of a treat earlier, I got a follow up 5 unit light engine move heading from the fuel pad and back to Rutherford yard. Power included 4 AC44C6M's, #4243, #4359, #4627 and #4778, and a long C44-9W #9843.

At this point eastbound Amtrak Pennsylvanian Train #42 made an appearance with Phase 7 painted P42DC #112 leading.

The last NS train of the day was a westbound manifest freight with AC44C6M's #4539 and #4456.

Moving onto the Hanover Road crossing, this is one of a surprisingly small number of grade crossings on the former B&O Washington Branch, aka CSX Capitol Sub aka MARC Camden Line. I had some free time one afternoon and figured I could catch a couple of MARC trains plus the daily road freight that made an appearance around 530p to 600p. Here we see eastbound MARC Camden Line Train 852 with MP36PH-3C #11 and cab car #8047. The train is slowing down from the usual track speed of 70mph due to the curves around the famous Thomas Viaduct.

Here we find westbound MARC Camden Line Train Train 857 with MP36PH-3C #14 and  cab car #8055 having accelerated close to track speed after clearing the curves about a mile to the east.

Finally we have CSX manifest freight symbol M300 with ES44AC #3165 and C40-10W #5244. Because the CSX Capitol Sub has very few speed restrictions, CSX dispatchers can run M300 in the 36 minute gap between MARC trains 854 and 856 as the freight can maintain the track speed of 50mph all the way between JD TOWER and the Thomas Viaduct where additional tracks become available to scoot MARC trains by. Although 50mph is slower than the MARC trains 70mph, the MARC trains have to make multiple station stops while the freight does not. This results in a similar average speed.

Well that's all for my annual trip to HARRIS tower. Check back next week as I take my first ever ride on an Acela Next Gen.
